windows xp start up screen is frozen

when i turn on my desktop the windows screen bars moves for a couple of seconds and
then just freezes and does nothing else what could be the problem

Try entering into Safe Mode by tapping F8 repeatedly after turning on your computer. You should get a screen that comes up with several options. Choose Safe mode.

This will then let you see what all is loading behind the scenes when the load screen is hiding it.
