computer not shutting down

Hi everyone
I have a sony vaio vista, recently it wouldnt shut down, then have it converted to black xp thinking this would solve the problem.
The problem however remains, whenever i am shutting off, it says computer is downloading , "dont shut off" but this takes forever (sometimes a whole day) eventually i have to press the shut of button.
dont know if i make my self clear.
please help
