Hi, I have Windows Vista Home Premium on an HP dv6000 series laptop PC. For some reason I cannot connect to the internet. I ran through everything in the Malware Sections of this forum and got rid of anything malicious or any spyware etc. It runs better, but still no internet. :help:  What happens is, I can see my Wireless Network and the list of wireless networks that the PC is picking up, and sometimes it even says "Connected" in bold letters. But still no internet. And as for the icon on the taskbar, on the bottom right of the screen, it shows the internet icon (ya know, the 2 computers diagonally from each other) and the 2 computer flash back and forth when it says I'm connected, but there is no "Globe" rotating on the one side of the 2 computers (you know what I mean, when you are connected to the internet that globe spins and the computers flash on that icon).

So I think this problem is pretty easily solvable. I am just not a genius with computers so I don't know where to look to solve the problem. :) I'm pretty sure some basic Internet Options in Vista were turned off by the virus or whatever it had. For example, I found one one day and it said "Allow this computer to connect to the internet", and it was set to "No". When I tried to change it to "Yes" (or "Allow" can't remember which) my PC just froze up. And now I can't remember how I got to that option. So maybe if someone knows some good places to look for some basic internet connection options that would affect my connection, please let me know. I need this PC and the internet for work and school!

One more thing. When I go into "Device Manager" right away a sub-folder comes up underneath the DVD/CD-ROM section and it has an orange triangle with an (!) exclamation mark in the middle. And the same goes for underneath the (I think it's "Network connections" section) this one has three sub-folders, one of which is called "WAN miniport " I think. And that has the orange triangle with the ! in it. Needless to say my D:/ doesn't work at the moment either!

:) Any help would be greatly appreciated!! :)

This is important. Check again, where exactly the error is located, and what are the exact names of the entries.
I assume, you're talking about "Network Adapters" section?

Checking...

Yes it is the section "Network adapters" then the sub-folder (its got 3 total, this is the only one with the ! in a triangle symbol) is called "WAN Miniport (Network Monitor)"

By the way the other section is called "DVD/CD ROM drives" and its sub-folder (with the ! in an orange triangle symbol) is called, "HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-T20L ATA Device"

Hope this helps!

A WAN miniport is generally created when you create a VPN(Virtual Private Network) on your computer to connect to some network(say, the network at your workplace). If you do not use a VPN or do not run any applications "remotely", it's not important, and it doesn't have anything to do with your internet connection problem.

Try these steps, first...

Turn off computer. Disconnect router, and modem from power source for 30 seconds.
Power them back on.
Restart computer.

If that doesn't work, bypass router, and connect computer straight to the modem.

If that doesn't work...
Go Start>Run (Start search in Vista), type in:
cmd
Click OK.

In Command Prompt window, type in following commands, and hit Enter after each one:
ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /registerdns
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew

Restart computer.

If that doesn't work...
Go Start>Run (Start search in Vista), type in:
cmd
Click OK.

At Command Prompt, type in:
netsh int ip reset reset.log
Hit Enter.
Type in:
netsh winsock reset catalog
Hit Enter.

Restart computer.

If that doesn't work...
Download, install, and run WinSockFix: http://www.softpedia...inSockFix.shtml
Restart computer, and check again.

Wow that's a lot to try. Thanks for all the suggestions!

I'll give them all a shot and I'll let you know how it worked out.

**Just A Reminder: My D:/ Drive does not read anything (hence the ! in a triangle thing). And whenever I go to shut down or restart my computer, I get that blue screen that says something about a "Physical Memory Dump" and it counts to about 100 then restarts Windows, where I get an error message that says something like "Windows has recovered from an unexpected shutdown or something". (So I keep it on hibernate when I'm done with it). I don't know if those two problems can mean something else to you or help to figure out the problem easier. So I figured I'd mention it again.**

1.) The power off and on of the router, modem and PC had no effect.

2.) I typed in all of the commands in the Command Prompt Window in the order you listed them in and this is what I got...The first 3 commands:
ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /registerdns
ipconfig /release
...I got the same message. It said,"The requested operation requires elevation." for those first 3 commands.

The last command (ipconfig /renew), I got the following message: "No operation can be performed on Local Area Connection while it has its media disconnected." :)

3.) Ok, the next one I went to the Command Prompt again and typed in, "netsh int ip reset reset.log". I got a long message for this one. It read exactly as follows...
"Reseting Echo Request, failed.
The requested operation requires elevation.
Reseting Global, failed.
The requested operation requires elevation.
Resetting Interface, failed.
The requested operation requires elevation.
There's no user specified settings to be reset."
:)

Then...I tried the next command ("netsh winsock reset catalog"), and I got the same old error again...
"The requested operation requires elevation."

I have no idea what's going on here.

4.) I'll get back to you on this last step (the Registry Cleaner: WinSockFix). I have to DL it on this PC , get my flash card, put it on my flash card to transfer it to the problem PC and run it. When I do all that I'll let you know ASAP!

Thanks again for the suggestions and help you're giving me!!

The requested operation requires elevation

You need to re-run all steps, but this time to avoid the above message, go Start>Start search, type in:
cmd
Right click on cmd.exe at the top, and click "Run as Administrator"
