I have an e-machine with windows XP and my disc drive won't read anything. I can't play a CD, upload my music from a CD onto windows media player, or any of that good stuff.

I followed directions given here: http://www.geekstogo...rk-t220353.html

and my disc drive now shows up in 'my computer' (which it didn't before) but it still does not want to work. Should I wait for the person in that thread to respond? Or will someone help me? If I should wait for the person who was helping in the above thread, my apologies for starting a new thread. I just want to know these things because I might be buying a new disc drive soon if this doesn't get fixed.

Does the drive light come on, when you insert disk?
Can you hear disk spinning?

Yes to both. I can hear it spin for a little bit. and then it goes like "ernk" and doesn't spin anymore.

I think, it's dead.

One more thing to try...

Go to Device Manager, click a "+" sign next to IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers.
You'll see two items:
- ATA Channel0 (or Primary Channel)
- ATA Channel1 (or Secondary Channel)
Right click on each of them, and click Uninstall. Confirm.
Restart Windows. They'll be automatically reinstalled.

Where's device manager located?

and if it indeed is dead, I just go buy another one and get somebody to install it?

Go Start>Run, type in:
devmgmt.msc
Click OK.

You can install the drive yourself. New double layer DVD RW sell for $30.
