Screen Goes Blank

I have a friend who's computer will boot up to right past the point where the XP logo and load box finish and then right after that loads, the screen goes black. I can still see and move the mouse but I can't click on anything, nor can I see anything else. I have already tried to boot into safe mode, when I try that, safe mode boots up, but I still have a similar problem. The screen is mostly black, I can still see the mouse and I can see where it says safe mode around the four corners, but again, I can't click on anything or see anything else. Any advice would be great!
