Motherboard and CPU advice

I'm building my first computer and I need some help choosing a good motherboard and CPU, I've heard that the AMD Athlon 64 X2 is a good CPU but I'd like some other opinions. I would also like it to be compatible with my GeForce 9600 GT PCI that i just got. Pricing isn't a HUGE issue as im getting the rest of the parts relativly cheap but I would like it to be reasonably priced but I'm opened to anything
