Is there an easy way to delete hundreds of unread messages (stuff that was clearly spam and junk) that has accumulated in my Delete folder and are intermingled among other messages I would just as well retain?

Not really. You could try "View>Sort by" to try to group like messages.
You'll get the same thing by clicking the column headers (From, subject, received date, etc.).

You can speed up the deletion by holding the Control key while clicking messages to highlight a bunch of them.
Also, highlighting a message and holding the Shift key down while clicking another message will highlight all between the two. Then click the delete once to get rid of all highlighted messages.

If you have a lot less of the ones you want to keep, move the "keepers" to another folder and then delete the Deleted Items.dbx in the Message Store.
