Hi this is my first post and I hope you can help. I've been looking to cure the above problem and have struggled this far. I only appear to have the above issue and am a careful browser.

I've followed a similar thread that has been successfully dealt with by your Daemon. I've carried out all actions per that thread and now attach my Hijackthis log before I reconnect to the internet.

To my untrained eye most lines appear OK, hope you can confirm.

Many thanks in advance.

Hi Simon,

Your untrained eye let you down a little.

Here's what you need to do.

Firstly create a new folddr on your hard drive (for example C\HJT). Install HJT into that folder and run it from there. that way it can create backups if required.

Next rescan with HJT and check the following.

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page =
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {CFC69D80-D884-9E2A-507A-6B067ADD8506} - C:\WINDOWS\apiih.dll
O4 - Global Startup: Logitech Desktop Messenger.lnk = C:\Program Files\Desktop Messenger\8876480\Program\LDMConf.exe
O18 - Protocol: ActLink - {2A0C35F4-82A3-4C80-919D-7879FEE79DF6} - C:\Program Files\Contact Manager\actlink.dll

You also have the following optional

O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\OSA9.EXE <---This is a known resource hog, you can get rid of this and still access all office componants via start/programs

Ensure no windows open except HJT and click on fix checked.

Reboot into SAFE MODE, Set up your PC to show hiden files and using windows explorer delete the following

C:\WINDOWS\apiih.dll

Reverse the show hidden files to hide them again, Rescan with HJT and post the log back in this thread

Hi Usetobe
Thanks for quick response. I have carried out instructions but couldn't find c:\windows\apiih.dll. I assume show hidden files is per explorer options. I have also previously run xphidden.reg.

Here is my latest log.

Hi Simon,

Looks like we are almost there.

Please Download Silent Runners
Unzip it to a permanent folder.
Start SilentRunners.vbs
When your antivirus is giving an alert, do not block this. Allow the script.
Copy and paste the content of the txtfile you get afterwards in your next reply.

Rescan with HJT. Check the following entry:

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page =

Ensure no windows open except HJT and Click FIX CHECKED.

Rescan with HJT in normal mode and post log together with silent runners log back in this thread.

Hi Simon,

Silly me, i should have told you to turn off Spybot Teatimer whilst we carried out our fix as that can interfere with the process. You figured it out yourself, so well done.

From your log, I see nothing in the ways of trojans, nor any evil entities attempting to possess your computer, except for Windows but it's too late for that one. :tazz:

Congratulations your log now appears to be clean. ;)

Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:

Detect and Remove Programs:
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
Prevention Programs:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • IE/Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
Other necessary Programs:
  • AntiVirus Program<= An AntiVirus program is a must! Whether it is a free version like AVG or Anti-Vir, or a shareware version like Norton or Kapersky, this is a must have.
  • Firewall<= A firewall is definatley a must have. Two good free versions are Sygate and ZoneLabs.
  • More Secure Browser<= Internet Explorer is not the most secure and best browser. There are safer and better alternatives available. I recommend Firefox, however Opera and SlimBrowsers are good as well.
And also see TonyKlein's good advice
So how did I get infected in the first place? and AntiSpyware Net's spyware article: Spyware, Adware, Malware: What it is, how it got on my computer, how to get rid of it, and how to prevent it.

Hi Usetobe,

Thanks for your help. Some of the recommendations I already have as you've probably seen - I'll obviously be adding the rest before I take the PC back on line.

I had a quick look at donations - is there a suggested amount for the average population lacking in abramovich/gates funds.

Simon

Hi Simon,

We do not have any recommendations on donations, it is purely voluntary. Any amount donated, however small is a bonus for our cause.

Hi Usetobe
I popped home lunchtime to see if I could get on line. Booted up minus network cable initially, a spybot message appeared briefly on the screen. I didn't catch it but 'resident' was mentioned and 'start page'. I ran HJT again and the 'main, start page' line was back see below.

Is this OK or are there other things happening? I didn't go online in the end, obviously.

Regards

Simon

Hi Usetobe

OK I ran that deleted 'Main Startpage' again etc. Spybot always picks up this registry change which I deny but when hjt is run 'Main Startpage' is back. Having deleted it again, telling spybot to allow the change I went on line and didn't seem to have any problems. However it clearly isn't right and who know what is going on in the background.

Today I have done the following and am reporting back.

Restart Safemode
Ran HJT no probs to report. No 'Main Startpage'.
Ran clean up.

Normal boot
Spybot reports
Category Browser change
Change Value Change
Entry Startpage
Old data 'Nothing here'
New data Startpage

I denied change
Ran HJT log below.
Fix checked R0 'Main Startpage' etc
Spybot reported the change occurring - I allowed.
Ran Silentrunners report attached. I have highlighted stuff that looks a bit suss to me..

Most stuff I recognise but not everything.

Also I don't think wp.bmp got deleted before as it was my wallpaper still. However as you can see I've now changed it and completed the deletion.

I could go online again and visit a couple of plain vanilla sites and see what appears in the cleanup log. They may show where the bug is going.

Anyway thanks again for your help in this saga; looked like it was sorted at one point!!

Hi Simon,

Re the one's you don't recognise....

CTSvcCDA.EXE <------- creative labs, soundblaster

Wuauclt.exe <-----Windows Update AutoUpdate Client

MsPMSPSv.exe<------a process which normally comes with a specific update of Windows Media player

So there is no problems with those.

Now lets get on with the fix.

Download the following free 14 day trial.

Ewido

Install it and then double click on the new icon for the program. You can't miss it, it's a big yellow E. It will ask you to upgrade the database. Follow the instructions.
Once updated Do not run the program.

Please disable Spybot Tea timer as it could interfere with what we need to do.

Rescan with HJT, Check the following

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page =
O20 - Winlogon Notify: igfxcui - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\igfxsrvc.dll

ensure no windows open except HJT and click fix checked.

Reboot in Safe mode, ensure show hidden files is enabled and using windows explorer locate and delete the following.

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\igfxsrvc.dll
Lkbdflt2
<<-------Do a search for this one

Now run the ewido program only this time you do not need to update if asked. Once it is ready click on the Scanner button, Select C drive if you have more than one and then start.

grab a cup of coffee, sandwiches, book and sleeping bag as this will take some time. Once the first problem is detected ensure you tick the box for all (bottom left) and allow it to continue.

At the end of the scan, it may ask if you would like to delete anything found in archive or zipped files, OK that request, then click on save report. SAVE to the default location, it will then generate a text file. Copy that to post in this thread.

Carry out another HJT scan and post the log back here, together with the ewido report so we can sort out any remnants

Hi Usetobe

All done. It found something in hjt directory!!

Deleted the files. You didn't give a directory for Lkbdflt2 - I deleted two one in prog files /logitech and one in windows\system32.

Hi Usetobe

Meant to turn off; rebooted by accident lost my keyboard settings. Reinstalled from the cd and I attach what I hope is my final log. Phew..

Many thanks again.

Regards

Simon
