I just got a free 3.2 Intel P4 prescott from my brother (should beat the socks of my current 650 Athlon). I haven’t been building computers for about 4-5 years now and am looking for some recommendations.

I am looking for a good motherboard for ~$100. So far I’ve liked the Abit AS8. Can anyone recommend another motherboard I should consider before I buy?

Any gotchas I should consider while upgrading my system?

Thanks

free P4, nice!
that abit board should be just fine. doesnt look like there will be any gotcha's to worry about. I used an MSI PT880, and it was a breeze to set up.
you will need new RAM. definitely go for PC3200 DDR, and I would strongly recommend getting 2 matched sticks (2x 256MB or 2x 512MB). this will allow you to utilize the full 800Mhz FSB. better quality RAM (something the mainboard says it supports) is also recommended for performance and stability.

are you building a whole new system, or just going to move HD, etc from your old system?
