HDD self-test error

i have a problem.i want to reinstall windows XP sp 2 on my laptop but it seems that the booting cd can't read my HDD.i also tried to run an HDD self-test in BIOS and i got the following error:"failure reading".Need help

Where are you in the procedure to re-install?
What errors are you getting?

What is the make and model of the laptop?
Could be a SATA drive. The XP CD will not see the drive till the sata drivers are loaded.
