My daughter brought home her locked up and useless computer for Christmas, and I have spent a lot of my free time for the past week cleaning it of infestations. The list of parasites has been long but mostly cleaned. These included virtuamonde as well as about 10 other trojans, numerous viruses, and a host of pups (not seen this before...) as well as a lengthy bit of spam and the spyguard2008 (not sure of the name, I hate this one with a passion, as it pops up every other second while working on the comp, even in safe mode).

Initial infestation: trying to download and install some sort of player to allow the viewing of TV shows on the computer.

What it did:

  • Infested with ads and spam as to slow down the computer to be inoperable.
  • Disabled task manager so as not to be able to open it to shut down running programs
  • disabled older spybot program installed on computer.
  • deleted ad-aware
  • deleted msconfig.exe
  • changed urls and ability to find web resources to remove spyware, viruses and trojans.

What I've done to fix it:
  • Booted into safe mode (the spyguard 2008 still plagued me here though)
  • installed and ran new spybot-> found ALOT of stuff, including KGB keylogger, which it was unable to remove.
  • after main boot, downloaded and installed ad-aware. -> found and removed more, as well as some of the things that spybot had removed (it came back)
  • with a smaller list of infections, was able to use combofix to remove a bunch, and then deleted xpnetdiag.exe using hijackthis.
  • uninstalled and then reinstalled Java

What was left: there were a few lines in HJT that would not stay deleted, name escapes me, but it was a bunch of nonsense letters. These kept coming back. Came back to your forums today for some heavy reading, now that I have the time, and discovered the old programs aren't the best anymore.

Followed your new instructions to the T. ATF cleaned, ERUNT, and system points, and ran Malwarebytes' Antimalware. This got rid of the problem in HJT after a few times of repeating the process, but I have something left over. Seems the trojan.agent comes back after reboot, and I have an O20 line from HJT that eludes me. Furthermore, I have not run the ad-aware and spybot again since using the newer stuff, but I still 'seem' to have KGB keylogger on my system, although nothing is shown in HJT or Antimalware. The only way to find this is using the search function, and, while not showing up when searching for 'KGB' on my system, it DID show up when searching for LOGS. On the search function, there is a list of programs that match, and where they are located. This is where I have NO CLUE what is going on on this computer, as far as I have ever seen, all found programs have a path to their location, starting with C: or D: (the 2 logical drives on the system, the rest being optical or floppy). There is an entire list of programs, all having to do with or in the folders of KGB that have no destination path other than "Program Files" Program Files/KGB" or Program Files/KGB/Images". Where is this located? Directly in memory? And can you please take a look at the logs and see what I missed?

My last Malware log:
