Please help!

My Quick Launch toolbar just disappeared, I think at the same time I got a virus message from McAfee. I tried the usual to get it back, but get the message "cannot create toolbar". I have 2 folders that are Quick Launch, one under Default User which I assume is the, um, default, and the other under Owner. The folders have the shortcuts. Rebooting doesn't help, in fact, it may have been that it disappeared when I rebooted.

From a Google search, it seems to have happened to a lot of folks. The Microsoft site was no help.

I am running XP home edition. I also run Zone Alarm and McAfee online.

What can I do next?

Hopeless

Let us take a closer look at what is running on your PC. We'll need you to use a free diagnostic tool (HiJackThis) and post a log back here with the results.

Click the HijackThis Guide in my signature, download it and follow the instructions in the guide.

Most of what it lists will be harmless or even essential, DO NOT delete or modify anything yet! Someone will be along to tell you what steps to take after you post the contents of the scan results.

Ok, I had already downloaded and run Hijack This yesterday.

I had to - I also lost the ability to open Notepad and Netscape and mostly a lot of other things and it can't find my printer, even though it is listed and supposedly working properly, all this after the post. I was getting a low system resource message. I am also missing my Volume Control - in the control panel it gives me No Audio Device message. So, I had a printout of another similar message response, and I checked the ones that showed up on mine as well and fixed them, - sorry, but I couldn't get online. And that brought back the Notepad and Netscape (and even the pictures in the startup screen, but no Volume control or quick launch. I also ran a startup log. Course, a couple of items came right back up after I rebooted! (Like the pesky www.searchwww thing.

Is it my imagingation, or are there a lot of people out there in the same predicament?

Download the latest version of Ad-Aware from here (if you already have Ad-Aware installed, make sure that it is the latest version and always go online and update it before you run it).

After installing AAW, and before running the program, you must FIRST update the reference file following these instuctions. (and you must always do this before you run the program at any later date).

Reboot in safe mode (by tapping F8 at startup and select safe mode from the menu).
Be sure you're able to view hidden files, and remove the following files in bold (if found):

Now do the following:
Under Ad-aware 6 > Settings (Gear at the top) > Tweaks > Scanning Engine:
check: "Unload recognized processes during scanning."

Under Ad-aware 6 > Settings (Gear at the top) > Tweaks > Cleaning Engine:
Check: "Let Windows remove files in use after reboot."

Press "Scan Now"

- Check option "Use Custom scanning options"
- Check option "Activate In-Depth Scan"
- Press "Select drives\folders to scan"
- Select the active partition which is usually C:

Now press "Next" to let Ad-aware scan your drives. It will find a number of spyware files and registry keys. Right-click in that pane and choose "select all"

Now press "Next" again. It will ask you whether you'd like to remove all checked items. Click OK.

Finally, close Ad-Aware, and reboot.

Run Hijack This again and post back a fresh log.

I downloaded the latest Ad Aware and went into Safe mode. at first, it wouldn't let me. But when it finally did, I couldn't find Adaware - only the original download program. So I tried to reboot in normal mode. Now I can't get into Normal, I can't get back into Safe (any variation.). And I can't get into XP because it won't let me into Administrator or Owner, and there is no User default that it takes.

It says userinit doesn't work or something like that. (I am at work - can't get on at home at all!

Does this mean I am going to have to reload the system? And, I have an HP desktop with XP on a virtual drive.

I hate to lose everything again. I've only had this pc for 1 1/2 years now, and that was why I had to get it - I lost everything before.

So, any other way of forcing it to go back into normal?

Try restarting the computer using "last known good configuration":
1. Start Windows, or if it is running, shut Windows down, and then turn off the computer.
2. Restart the computer. The computer begins processing a set of instructions known as the Basic Input/Output System (BIOS). What is displayed depends on the BIOS manufacturer. Some computers display a progress bar that refers to the word BIOS, while others may not display any indication that this process is happening.
3. As soon as the BIOS has finished loading, begin tapping the F8 key on your keyboard. Continue to do so until the Windows Advanced Options menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
4. Using the arrow keys on the keyboard, scroll to and select the Last Known Good Configuration menu item, and then press Enter.

I did try the last known.

It gets me into safe mode as far as black screen with safe mode corners, then I can tell from the graphics that the welcome screen is in safe mode, but when I try to go into Owner, it takes a while and comes back with an error on line ... I think 440. As I said, I am at work, stupidly left the paper I wrote it on at work. It gives a different "value" error under User.

I tried Normal, Reboot, Safe Mode, Safe Mode with Networking. I got pretty much the same results.

Do you have an XP CD? If so, a repair installation should get your system running again, without losing any data or settings.

No cd.

HP puts a Recovery set on the hard drive - I can supposedly get to it if I use F10 while booting. Haven't tried it because it says it WILL erase anything you had installed after you got it hime. I can send for a CD for a "nominal fee", but it doesn't sound like XP, sounds like a recovery disc with an image?

I did write down my numbers OEM numbers.

This may sound elementary, but did you right click on the tool bar go to toolbars->quick launch?

No offense taken!

Yes, it won't let me. And in Properties I can check the Quick Launch all I want, but it doesn't stay checked.

And it says cannot make toolbar if you try.

Without a CD yoou can still recover XP, but it becomes much more difficult.

Here's one option:
http://support.micro...kb;EN-US;307545

ERD Commander will allow you to access and restore system restore files, but at $150 is too expensive for personal use:
http://www.winternal...002.asp?pid=erd

You should probably consider taking the system to a local computer shop that has the knowledge and access to the proper software tools to recover your system. <_<

Thanks, anyways!

I can't get in to do anything. And it looks like I'm stuck with reinstalling Windows. But you guys have been most helpful! I'm sure it would have worked at some point.

Taking it in sounds expensive as well, and I did that once on an old pc.

I've installed hard drives. I guess I can suffer.

But again, THANK YOU for all your help.

I'm Back!!!

As above, I had lost Quick Launch, etc. and had no way to get online or do things much. So, I ended up reinstalling XP from the "virtual drive" HP folks put on. But, hey, the good news is that all my stuff survived. The bad news is that ALL my stuff survived. I had to reinstall a few things, but now I can't get into Netscape, which is my default program. So, for different reasons I am back to the Hijack This log, and I downloaded Ad Aware and am ready to update it and run it after someone tells me to.

Thanks again for the help - you guys are far superior to the "customer service" I have received.

Here's the log:
