Hello everyone, im having a problem with my pc where i would try to back up my files but i keep getting a error code:(0x81000006)
This is exactly what it says to me." The Back up location cannot be found or is not valid.Review your back up settings
and check your hardware configuration. (0x81000006)

1.Now i've tried to call my the manufacturer and they are telling me that i need to re-install vista.
2.I've tried contacting mycrosoft and they just tell me they cant help me, that i have to talk to the original manufacturer.

Now i have a External Hard Drive which i took out of my old dying laptop and got a coolmax 2>5 eSata/ USB 2.0 Drive Enclosure and i was wondering if i should try to install my vista Cd in to that and reformat my primary drive? I took all my old pics, music, and other info out of the External hard drive and my second question is, Would it be a good idea to try to install vista on the external drive and then reformat my primary drive so i can re-install vista on the primary drive?
This is basically my first attemp to install an OS so im alittle worried that i could mess something up so i came here to get your guys help. :)

Hello,
I am a little bit confused about what you are trying to do.
Are you wanting to reinstall Vista on your primary drive, and store your data on your secondary drive?
You will most likely have to set the DVD as the first boot device in the BIOS.
Click here to see how to set the DVD as the first boot device.
Follow the on screen instructions to do a fresh install of Vista.
Formatting the drive (to install Vista) will wipe out your data so make sure that you have everything that you want saved.

ok sorry for the confusion, i'll try to explaine what i was doing before i got into this mess with microsoft.
i was surfing the net when my computer told me i had and important "security update" Msxml 4.0 SP2 (kB954430)
well i installed it and it told me to restart my pc so i did, went online and there goes the same update asking me to update again, so i thought i might of did something wrong and redid it, restarted my pc and it just kept asking me to update the same update, so i knew there was a problem here and i called microsoft and i went thru the whole checking my pc thing till they gave me a tech to help me and he asked me if it was ok if he could take control of my pc because there was a corrupted file in there, after he got done my pc was working fine till i wanted to back up my files because i was downloading alot of things and just wanted to make sure my pc and stuff is safe, well when i clicked on the "Back up your files" i get the error message 0x81000006. i have the 2.5 esata / usb 2.0 hard drive that i formated awhile ago and i was just wondering if i should try to install windows vista on that and then format my primary hard drive to re-install vista on it? i hope that helps out ty

You do not need Vista on your back up drive.
If Vista is working fine you do not need to reinstall it
You may need to format the seconday drive before you can use it as a back up drive.
You can not install Windows on a hard drive and move it to another computer.

1.ok since i formated my External hard drive i dont need to put windows vista back on it?
2. All i want to fix is this error on my pc from the primary hard drive, the one that gives me (0x81000006 code).
3. i thought that maybe because i formated the external hard drive that it needed an OS in it for back up?
I even went to seagate to get a program to check my hard drives and it only detects my External hard drive not my primary, im just wondering also
if i have to maybe re-install my primary hard drive?
Ok so if format my primary hard drive it wont erase windows vista on it?
sorry for all the questions im just trying to learn more and thank you for your help guys!!

1. If you are using a drive as a secondary (external, back up) drive you do not need an operating system on that drive.
2. You should not be getting an error after formatting the secondary drive. This error is usualy when the drive does not have enough free space to write data.
3. See answer 1.
If you format your primary hard drive you would have to reinstal Windows, and you will lose all of your data.
The seagate utility may only work with seagate hard drives.
If your computer boots up and works as it is supposed to there is no reason to reformat (and reinstal Windows).
