My computer turns on but my moniter doesn't turn on when i hit the button

I think its broken but could i do something to see if it really is?

First, is the monitor screen showing nothing, or is "on" lights to the monitor not on at all? If the on lights arn't on, try a different power outlet. If it is check the connection from the monitor to the computer. Never take the monitor apart however because it contains capacitors that can shock you.
