Hi. I'm having problems with Firefox and IE. They are not connecting to the internet. However, Opera works and connects to the internet fine. Other programs like AIM connect to the internet fine too. It's just Firefox and IE that are not working properly. Anyone know what is going on?

also, I don't know if this is related or not, but my Microsoft Word is not working either. When I start it, it just shows the logo then it freezes.

Howdy turiaf,

I'm sorry for the lack of responses. In the future, if you haven't received a reply to your thread for at least three days, please feel free to make use of The Waiting Room.

In regards to your issue, please restart your machine in Safe Mode with Networking -- are IE and Firefox able to connect to the Internet?

What version of Internet Explorer are you using?

Thanks,
- Dan

Sorry about that. I will use the waiting room next time.

Anyways, I started windows vista in safe mode with networking like you said. In this mode, both firefox and internet explorer connected to the internet. I have Firefox 2 and IE7. What should I do now?

Thanks!

Hey turiaf,

What sort of software security do you have installed (i.e. Firewall, anti-virus, etc.)? How confident are you that your machine is free of infection?

Step 1 - Generate a startup and uninstall list:
Please download HijackThis (if you do not already have it) and install it -- once it is installed, restart your computer. Once the computer starts up, launch HijackThis and then select the option Open the Misc Tools section -- select Generate StartupList log. Save the startup list in a safe location. Now select the option Open Uninstall Manager and then click Save list -- save it to a safe location. Please post the contents of the startup list and the uninstall list in your next response.

Also, try starting your machine in a clean boot state, and see if you can connect to the Internet.

Step 2 - Start your machine in a clean boot state:
  • Select Start
  • In the Start Search field type msconfig and press the enter key.
  • In the new window, select the General tab and then select Selective Startup.
  • Click to clear the Load Startup Items check box.
  • Verify that Load System Services and Use original boot configuration are checked.
  • Click the Services tab.
  • Click to select the Hide All Microsoft Services check box.
  • Click Disable All, and then click OK.
  • When you are prompted, click Restart to restart the computer.
When the computer reboots, are you able to connect to the Internet with Firefox and IE?
*Note: To return Windows to a normal startup mode, please do the following:
  • Select Start, and then click Run.
  • Type msconfig, and then click OK.
  • Click the General tab, click Normal Startup - load all device drivers and services, and then click OK. When you are prompted, click Restart to restart the computer.
Thanks,
- Dan

Try removing Norton from your machine and see if the issue persists.

Step 1 - Remove Norton from your machine:
  • Select Start
  • In the Start Search field type control.exe
  • In the new Control Panel window, click on Programs and then Uninstall a program.
  • From the list of applications, please uninstall all applications with Norton or Symantec in their names.
  • After manually removing the Norton applications, download and run the Norton Removal Tool -- once it is finished, restart your computer.
Once your machine boots back up, see if you can connect to the Internet with IE and FF.

I'm glad to hear that things are working. :) I'm not sure what functionality (if any) from Norton you were using, however to make sure that your machine is safe, I would recommend that you peruse the following tutorial, to ensure your system is secure -- Preventing Malware and Safe Computing. Just make sure you have some anti-spyware, anti-virus and firewall software installed and running on your machine.

Other than that, there's not really anything else that you need to do. Norton has been known to lock down certain network functionality when it expires and/or due to malware, so if you don't use/need it, then simply don't re-install it. If you do use it, you are welcome to re-install it, however I can not promise that the issue will not re-arise.

I'm happy we were able to help, and thanks for taking the time to post how your issue(s) were resolved; feedback is always appreciated. :)

Thanks for the help Dan. I will check out the tutorial and try to pay more attention to anti-virus stuff. Thank you.
