Couldn't connect iTunes to iTunes store

Hi,
I couldn't connect my iTunes to the iTunes store
when I try to, it says:

iTunes could not connect to the iTunes Store.
Make sure your network connection is active and try again.

I just bought an iPod touch a few days ago, but since I bought it and plugged it onto my laptop, I couldn't get connected to iTunes Store
please help me
