Hi Guys,

I need urgent help please...I have a VAIO with windows XP home edition (up to date) and Kaspersky 2009 internet security..
My SHUT DOWN BUTTON under START has vanished........


I originally posted the message under MALWARE section, where handhfan helped me a lot to clear all my viruses etc. however my SHUT DOWN BUTTON UNDER START button hasnt reappeared and I have now been referred here

The original message was as below:(all problem sorted except still no SHUT DOWN Button)

My problem is this: My shut down button has vanised, so when I click on START , i only have LOG OFF button at the bottom and the SHUT DOWN button has gone......The problem started when i was running teh laptop without any antivirus (stupid i know). I have now installed Kaspersky and done full system scans etc and cleared a lot. However i still face this issue and also when I start up my laptop I get a black run box with C:\WINDOWS\system32\cmd.exe in the blue bar and the below message

"The command prompt has been disabled by your administrator.

Please press any key to continue . . ."

Can someone please help me..I am really caught out and not sure what to do?

I tried but when i click on start , run and type gpedit.msc and hit enter i get the following message

"Windows cannot find gpedit.msc. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To search for a while, click the start again, and then click search."

Any further Ideas?

That's because gpedit.msc is only available in XP Pro... simple mistake...

I'm going to ask for a registry export..

Please go to Start and click Run...

Copy and Paste the following into the white box

regedit /e C:\look.txt "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\System"

Click OK.


Now go to Start and click Run... again

Copy and Paste the following into the white box

C:\look.txt

Click Ok.

In the Window that pops up, Copy and Paste the whole thing here..

Well it creates a text file with about 10 words on it... but that's about all..

The registry part of this is just showing me a part that may have to do with the problem; it doesn't actually change anything...

Please go to Start and click Run...

Copy and Paste the following into the white box

regedit /e C:\abc123.txt HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

Click OK.


Now go to Start and click Run... again

Copy and Paste the following into the white box

C:\abc123.txt

Click Ok.

In the Window that pops up, Copy and Paste the whole thing here.."

So sorry it took me so long... I wanted to test it out first... May I ask you a question before we continue?

You have to restart your computer after the fix for it to work... can you restart your computer without the start menu thing?

EDIT: I don't want you to restart now! just asking for later

yeah, easy, i can log off (thats still available) then on the XP menu to select user, there is the option to turn off computer and if i select that i do get the 3 options standby, turn off and restart.

thats how i shut down at the moment!!

Okay!! Here we go!

Before we get to the fix, please make a backup of your registry.. You don't need to restart yet!!

Editing the registry can be dangerous, so in the event that an error occurs; we should have a backup:
(not to worry, matters serious as this are handled with the utmost care)

Please go to Start then Run
Then type into the box regedit and click Ok

In the new window on the left panel, please click My Computer, just to highlight it
Next, click File on the menu bar and select Export

In the new window:
On the Save In: part, click on the drop-down menu and select Desktop
In File Name: part, type in RegBackUp
Click Save

Wait while the registry is being copied, and when it is finished close the window.
On your desktop should be a file that looks like this:



Just let me know that you have managed to get that ok?

hmm..sounds dangerous! messing with the registry and all...but am doing wht u said now...

just hope that you did attend ur classes and cleard some exams at geek university
