I took out the old sticks (2 256mg)and put in the new one( 1 gig) . Initially, I was able to startup ok. I then shut down normally to see if it was going to work again and it said windows could not load. It gave me the option to start with the "last known best configuration" or restart normally or safemode. I initially tried "last best configuration, that just lead to a black screen. I then rebooted, got the same error and tried normal, it acted like it was going to run XP, got the initial XP screen, then got a black screen. Tried rebooting one more time, with "last best config" and it gave me dump of physical memory. Any suggestions? THANKS!

Also, not sure if this has to do with any of this, but I noticed I was gettting a RUNDLL error once windows loaded the first time. . I didn't get it all but I know it said RUNDLL and something to do with windows. I know that wasn't very specific, but not sure if that has to do with anything or not.

Sorry, one more thing I forgot to mention, after I put the RAM in it recognized it and asked me if I wanted to continue or go to system configuration, I just continued, didn't change any configurations. Should have I?

Hello realapp,

have you tried going into the setup (BIOS) and resetting the BIOS to the default settings?

Olrik

No, I haven't but I'm not exactly sure how to do that? Can you tell me? Thank you!!!!

Ok, I believe I got into the BIOS(tapped F2) but I don't see any where to change to defalut settings. Can you instruct me on this? Thanks!

I looked up on Dell and think I did it correct. I got into the BIOS and hit "alt + f" keys. I believe this was the correct option based on what it was telling me. Now I tried to reboot and it gave me option of safe mode, normal, etc. I chose normal and it just went to black screen and won't go any further now. I chose last best know configuration, same thing. I then chose Safe mode and it loads in safe mode. So, not sure if this helped or not? Thanks!

When you start up the computer, keep pressing the Delete key.
This should bring you into a blue screen with a few options.
Look around for an option that goes along the lines of "Reset to Defaults"

While the PC is starting up, look at the bottom of the screeen.
It should say Press <Key> to continue, press the key and you should be able to get into the BIOS.

I have pressed the f2 key and it doesn't bring me to a blue screen but into another screen which doesn't give me any options for reset defaults/ When I looked up the dell info on how to get into the BIOS it said to press the "alt + f" keys once I got into this screen. I believe this was the correct option based on what it was telling me.

See post # 18 today. Thanks!!

We've got -some- progress at least.
Boot to safe mode and lets see if you have any errors in the event viewer.
  • Go to Start and open Run.
  • In the Box, type in eventvwr
  • When the window pops up. Go to the system log and application log.
  • Look for red circles with Xs in them around the time of error.
  • Once you've opened the error press the button to the right with the 2 papers on it. (under the 'down' arrow)
  • Please attach the information you just copied onto your next reply.

Olrik

I just realized after starting to post below that there are tons of errors and Ihave been just typing them in here. Since I am in safe mode on my "problem" computer" is there another way to get all this info to you? As I'm thinking this could take forever. There are approx 147 dating back to 4/2/2007.

I found a couple of errrors and there were just some exclamation points (warnings) I just included the errors. Application errors first. It didn't do anything when I pushed the paper icons.

I just realized the paper icons were the copy icons,(duh:) but I still don't think I can copy and access internet exporer in safemode.
Thanks. !

get a screen shot of the most recent errors and post it back here...
you get a screenshot by pressing the ctrl key and the prt scr key at the same time....
then open paint...left click in the white area and then press ctrl and the v key..then click on save...upper left...name it and in the area just below that select .jpg format..save it to your desktop so it will be easy to find later...in your next reply in the attachment area just below where you type your reply click on choose file button...then on the left side click on desktop...find the screenshot and click on it...then on the green button to the right of the choose file button click on upload...

download and install WhoCrashed from here...
This program checks for any drivers which may have been causing your computer to crash....

click on it...then run...then next...put a tick in accept...then next..put a tick in the don't create a start menu folder..then next...put a tick in create a desktop icon..then install.. then make sure there is a tick in launch whocrashed...then finish...then click Analyze ...
WhoCrashed will create report...you have to scroll down to see it
Copy and paste it into your next reply...

Ok, but again, I need to make sure that I can do this in SAFEMODE because right now I'm doing these post from a different computer than my problem computer. The only way I can save all that and get ito to you is to be able to do it in safe mode because otherwise my computer doesn't seem to be booting up correctly in order to get to the internet. Thanks!

try safe mode with networking...if you still can't connect to the internet ....
use a usb flash drive to get whocrashed onto the misbehaving computer and use it to copy the text file asked for by Artellos and the whocrashed report by me...

I couldn't do a print screen for whatever reason. But I was able to copy (using safemode w/networking). I didn' copy all of the errors (as I mentioned before there are hundreds)
however, I tried to include the most recent and some of the oldest ones. Let me know if this is helpful or I need to do something else. Thanks. I am posting this (while I can!) and then going to try and download Whocrashed as suggested.
