Two days ago this red circle with a white X showed up in the Toolbar and started popping up very nasty websites. Please help me remove it as this is a computer that children use. (fortunately they were not using it when this happened.) I have tried to delete the Param32.dll from the windows/system32 file but, it will not let me delete it. I have tried to rename it, move it, Delete it both in safe mode and in regular windows. Please look at the log and let me know what to do. :tazz: ;) Thanks!! ;)

I need you to copy all of the Killbox instructions below and paste them into Notepad and save it.

* Please download the Killbox by Option^Explicit.

*Save it to your desktop.

* Please run Killbox.exe.

* Select "Delete on Reboot".

* Open the Notepad file where you saved these instructions earlier, and copy all of the file names below to the clipboard by highlighting them ALL, then pressing CTRL + C:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\param32.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\guninst.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system\guninst.exe

* Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose "Paste from Clipboard".

* Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button. Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click "No" at the Pending Operations prompt.

After your computer reboots, go into this folder:

C:\WINDOWS\System or C:\Windows\System32 (not sure which folder they will be in on a 98!)

Delete icons you find in there. For example:

casino.ico
date.ico
games.ico
mobile.ico
network.ico
pharm.ico
pharm2.ico
scanner.ico
spam.ico
spyware.ico

Download, install, and run CleanUp!

Then, please run this online virus scan:
ActiveScan

Copy the results of the ActiveScan and paste them here along with a new HiJackThis log.

Hello again. I did as instructed and the results are great so far. :tazz: The pop ups icon is gone from the taskbar and the pop ups have stopped for now. The Report shows another issue when I ran the activescan. There was only one Icon with the designation .ico and I deleted it. ;)

Results are as follows:

First the ActiveScan-

Incident Status Location

Adware:Adware/ExactSearch No disinfected Windows Registry

END OF ActiveScan
-----------

Then Hijack log-

That's it! You're good to go ;)

Congratulations your log is clean! Great job on the clean up :tazz:

Detect and Remove Programs:
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
Prevention Programs:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well known ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
Other necessary Programs:
  • AntiVirus Program<= An AntiVirus program is a must! Whether it is a free version like AVG or Anti-Vir, or a shareware version like Norton or Kapersky, this is a must have.
  • Firewall<= A firewall is definitely a must have. Two good free versions are Sygate and ZoneLabs.
