Hello. I was told to come here from the malware forum. My computer has been cleaned of many viruses and spyware but still has the following problems:

-stuck in some version of safe mode
-every time the computer starts, I get an audio message which says "system completed power-on self-test. System now booting from operating system.

here is my boot file:

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect

The safeboot box is not checked in msconfig, and is in normal start-up mode.

any advice would be greatly appreciated. :)

Are you certain you are in safe mode or do your video drivers just need reinstalled? When you boot up in to safe mode it will actually say "Safe Mode" in all four corners of your desktop. If it is just your video drivers then it will not say Safe Mode. If not then check in Device Manager and see if the drivers are loaded for your Video card.

Ok, I must not be in safe mode. I checked the hardware and the geforce4 mx440 display driver is working. These hardware devices aren't working:

Under other devices:
ethernet controller
ethernet controller
ethernet controller
multimedia audio controller
raid controller
sm bus controller

Under sound video and game controllers:
game port for creative

I don't have internet access for the computer, so I either have to download from this computer and transfer the driver(s), or do what I've been avoiding and remove my wireless card from this computer and put it in the other one. Do you know which driver it is most likely to be?

Looks like you need to install all of the drivers for your PC. What brand and model is it? Also check your display setting and see what they are set for.

I would think that there is a setting in the BIOS that will control the message at startup. You should be able to turn it off if you don't want it to do that anymore.
