Replacement battery issue with Tablet 1100

I have an HP (Compaq) Tablet 1100 for which I installed a replacement battery. The battery seems to work, but the pc is not recognizing it. When I unplug the power, the pc shuts down. I've tried draining the battery and recharging; that worked for one day. It was suggested to update the bios, but I cannot find a bios update for this computer. Any ideas?
