Should I rename the old iexplore.exe so that the original file is named correctly before running Appid.reg?

Well, I renamed the old iexplore.exe back to its proper name. Then I ran the appid.reg file and rebooted. I attempted to start up IE. This time when I clicked on the link my mouse icon turned into an hour glass for about 10-15 seconds and then went back to the arrow. IE didn't load and didn't provide me with an error message.

The problem persists. :tazz:

Let's have a look at another important part of the registry.
Click Start > Run > copy&paste
regedit.exe /e C:\appliactie.txt "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Applications\iexplore.exe"

> OK

Post the content of the file C:\appliactie.txt that will be created.

Here it is:

*********************************

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Applications\iexplore.exe]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Applications\iexplore.exe\shell]
"FriendlyCache"="Internet Explorer"
"FriendlyCacheCTime"=hex:00,b8,42,a6,55,4f,c2,01

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Applications\iexplore.exe\shell\open]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Applications\iexplore.exe\shell\open\command]
@="\"C:\\PROGRA~1\\INTERN~1\\IEXPLO~1.OLD\" %1"

Good. Save that file as a backup in case we want to restore the old settings.

Copy the part in bold below into notepad and save it as Appid.reg
Set Filetype to "all files"

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Applications\iexplore.exe\shell]
"FriendlyCache"=-
"FriendlyCacheCTime"=-

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Applications\iexplore.exe\shell\open\command]
@="\"C:\\Program Files\\Internet Explorer\\iexplore.exe\" %1"

Doubleclick that file and confirm you want to merge it with the registry.

It may take a reboot for these changes to be effective.

Okie doke, then. I saved the text as appid.reg and ran it successfully as you suggested. I rebooted and tried IE. No change here.

The problem persists. Sorry it took a little longer responding this time.

Download this zip:

http://www.downloads...atam.org/pv.zip
Please unzip it to the desktop. It will not work if you run it from inside the zip.

After unzipped go to the desktop. Open the pv folder. Double click on the runme.bat

A dos window will open. Please select option 2 for IE dll's by typing 2 and then pressing enter.

Notepad will open with a log in it. Please copy and paste the log into this post.

I downloaded the .zip file. I extracted it to my desktop. I opened the newly created folder. I double clicked runme.bat to run it. When the menu window popped up, I hit '2' and then 'enter'.

It then popped up a message (not exactly sure what it said), opened up a My Documents folder window and a logfile. I looked at the logfile and found it empty, but I'll post the results here anyway *grins*:

************************************************

************************************************

I just found out what the error message is reading:

************************************************

"pv: No matching processes found.
Starting an Internet explorer."

************************************************

By the way, after it stated that it was starting 'an Internet explorer' nothing happened, much the way nothing happens when I try to open IE.

Not sure if it will tell me anything but can you try option 1 ?

Make sure to have only one instance of explorer.exe running

Oh boy.

Here is one option where I secretly hope it won't work, since I should have seen it on page 1.

In Add/Remove Software uninstall Zero Popups.

Let me know if that helps and feel free to call me an idiot if it does.

I didn't find 'Zero Popups' in my Add/Remove Software window. I've looked pretty hard to find anything similar to it. Where else would I find it so that I can uninstall it?

Well, I searched all of my harddrives for zpu.exe. I must have uninstalled it already for one reason or another since I posted my very first hijackthis.log file.
