Hello,

Here's the background info: My sister's computer (custom built) had too many viruses that we decided to save some files to a flash drive and just do a clean new install of WIN XP. It needed a reinstallation anyway because one of the many popus was an error stating that the copy of WIN XP on the computer was not genuine.

During installation, the HD was in two partitions so I deleted one of them to combine the capacity. At the time I thought if I did 'Repair' there would be the chance that infected files would remain hidden...After the installation I found that there was no internet connection. On the phone with Comcast they saw that the computer was not displaying an IP address. We tried ipconfig/renew and /release and flush...did not work. The next day I asked my sister, over the phone, to type ipconfig /all but she said it wouldn't do anything. Maybe she wasn't typing it right the 5 times I asked her to try again.

In the Support Tab where the IP Address is supposed to be, it reads UNKNOWN.

* Connection to the modem is via Ethernet, no router. The make and model of the modem is ARRIS, TM502G/CT-8 and #719492.

Device Manager Yellow Question Marks: (1) Internet Controller, (2) Multimedia Audio Controller (listed two times), (3) PCI Simple Communication Controller, (4) SM Bus Controller and (5) Video Controller.

Please guide me on how to download the drivers or is this a different problem.

When I do get the internet to work I want to install a new AV program and firewall (ZoneAlarm?) and after that I would pull the files off the flash drive to the computer. When I do get to this point do I just run the AV program on just the Flash Drive completely to look for infected files?

Your help would be greatly appreciated!

I had a problem very similar to this recently. My wireless connection continued to get an "Invalid IP" error after installing Service Pack 3. I uninstalled SP3 and my connection returned to normal. Have you installed any of the Service Packs for Windows?

what's the make and model of the computer? scratch that....you said it's custom built...what we'd need to know is the make and model of the ethernet card (NIC)

I haven't tried to install SP3 because I didn't have internet connection after reinstalling Windows XP. Going to Windows Update would have been my first step.

By the way, when I go to Control Panel, Windows Firewall is not on the list. Is there a way to put it back on the list or access the General Windows Firewall screen another way so I can make sure it is on? Is it possible to get infected even though I am not on the internet, because I cant, without the Antivirus Program installed? Should I disconnect the ethernet connection from the computer? If I do that though, it might knock off the cable and phone that I have with Comcast as well...Not sure. I don't live w/ my sister.

windows firewall is part of service pack 1 (might be 2....i can't remember right this second) so if you formatted and reinstalled with a CD that didn't have the right service pack then you won't have the firewall functionality...

at the moment i'm PRETTY sure that you don't have the drivers for your ethernet card installed...therefore you're not connected to the internet at all...no matter if you're connected to the modem or not..

also....IN GENERAL (with regards to home users)...malicious people don't crawl the entire pool of possibly connected computers and FORCE viruses in....they wait for you to come to them (MUCH easier for them) by making you click on buttons in emails or tricking you into downloading something from their site...if you don't go online (and aren't already infected) then the chances of you getting something is unlikely (sort of like catching the flu from someone who's riding the subway when you're riding in a cab....just not gonna happen)

When I first planned to get you the information I found, I saw that Aida32 did not have as much info as I thought it would so I decided to hold off until I got around to running WinAudit as well.
