older laptop and newer xp cd are they compatible?

hello.. i have an older dell inspiron 1100 that i was wanting to reformat because its all full of junk and runs very slow now.. i have lost my xp cd that came with the laptop but my dad gave me his xp disc but its from a computer that is 2 years newer.. if i use that disc will it work properly or will i end up causing more damage? any help?

It may work, you would need to use the CD key that is on the bottom of your laptop. You will may have to call in to activate it but it may also activate online. Either way it should work. What brand of computer does your dad have?
