Ok...we'll do this the old fashioned way. I'm still convinced we're looking for an incompatible driver.

Click the Start orb and type msconfig in the search box at the bottom of the start menu. Then click on the top entry in the search results.

In the configuration utility, under the "Services" tab check the box at the bottom to "Hide all Microsoft Services", then click on "Disable All". Apply the change and reboot. You'll receive a configuration alert when Windows starts...tick the box to not show it again and click "Ok".

In the msconfig window, what services are showing with the "Hide" box checked?

We're going to have to narrow this down a step at a time. This is a long topic...let me know if I start covering ground you and Artellos have already been to.

Unfortunately, there's no copy in the configuration utility.

Do you know how to do screenshots?

If you have the "Hide all Microsoft Services" box checked, there should be few (if any) services with Microsoft by them. Just list the ones that are not by Microsoft...we're looking for a third party driver.

oh crap.....rofl.
the box wasnt checked anymore, all those are by microsoft.
none of the others are checked when i recheck the hide all ms box.

there is however one that is showing as running, it is:

remote procedure call (rpc) net manufactured by: absolute software corp.

I compared all the running services with the error logs in the report...nothing there that would cause it to blue screen that I can see.

Download WhoCrashed, install it, and run it...see if it will shed any light on this. With our luck it'll tell us it's AOL...

If we can get it to stop crashing, we can zero in on the problem.

here is the result!
the plot thickens.....

Analysis
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Crash dump directory: C:\Windows\Minidump

Crash dumps are enabled on your computer.

No crash dumps have been found on your computer

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Conclusion
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Crash dumps are enabled and no crash dumps have been found on your computer. In case your computer does experience sudden reboots it is likely these are caused by malfunctioning hardware or power failure. Then it's suggested you contact the support department of the manufacturer of your system or test your system with a memory test utility for further investigation.

next.... :)

many thanks

as a last resort before re installing vista etc.
can i swap the hard drive from mine into my wifes laptop (same as mine) to see if the problem persists? that will tell me whether its hardware or software wont it?
i dont want to harm her laptop in any way, but figure swapping the hard drive wont hurt anything....

Hello martin,

That's correct.
It won't hurt your wife's laptop and you will figure out if it's hardware or software related.

Regards,
Olrik
