ok, my mobo has a 24 pin power supply port, and the extra 4 pin port. it has a 20 pin and four pin power supply right now, but can i switch it with a 24 pin and no extra 4?

A 24 pin board can talk to a 20 pin power supply. The extra 4 (if you mean the cable that's typically coloured yellow and black) is compulsory.

Yes, that 4-Pin with just the yellow and black wires is MANDATORY.

All ATX PSU's have the 4-pin connector, so if you have a 24-pin board you want a 24-pin ATX PSU.
