I can only assume its the popuper.exe myself, but I cant delete it and keep it dead.

Hi D-Rock,

You are running HijackThis from the Desktop; please create a new folder for it and move the program into the new folder. That way it can create backups if required.

Please set your system to show
all files; please see here if you're unsure how to do this.

Press Control-Alt-Del to enter the Task Manager.

Click on the Processes tab and end the following processes:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\intmonp.exe
C:\WINDOWS\popuper.exe

Exit the Task Manager when finished.

Reboot into Safe Mode: please see here if you are not sure how to do this.

Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders, and delete them:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\intmonp.exe
C:\WINDOWS\popuper.exe

Exit Explorer, and reboot as normal afterwards.

If you were unable to find any of the files then please follow these additional instructions:

Download Pocket Killbox and unzip it; save it to your Desktop.

Run it, and click the radio button that says Delete a file on reboot. For each of the files you could not delete, paste them one at a time into the full path of file to delete box and click the red circle with a white cross in it.

The program will ask you if you want to reboot; say No each time until the last one has been pasted in whereupon you should answer Yes.

Let the system reboot.

Post back a fresh HijackThis log and we will take another look.

Open Notepad. Copy EVERYTHING in the code box below and paste it into a new notepad file. Change the 'Save As Type' to "All Files" and save it as fix.reg on your desktop. Make sure there is NO blank line above REGEDIT4:

Locate fix.reg on your desktop and doubleclick on it. When asked if you want to merge with the registry click YES. After you receive the prompt "merged successfully", follow the rest of the instructions below.

Rescan with HJT, check the following:

Ensure no windows open other than HJT and click Fix Checked

Download the following program to clear out temp files junk etc.

Cleanup

Reboot into SAFE MODE by tapping F8 Key whilst PC starts up, select SAFE MODE.

Run Cleanup.

Reboot PC normally rescan with HJT and post the log back in this thread.

Right click your background, select properties, desktop and set display, Let me know if you have your display/background back.

If there is anything else you can see, that would be great. Also Im looking for a better "freeware" firewall than Kerio, its kind of tempramental.

Hi D-rock,

From your log, I see nothing in the ways of trojans, nor any evil entities attempting to possess your computer, except for Windows but it's too late for that one. :tazz:

Congratulations your log now appears to be clean. ;)

Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:

Detect and Remove Programs:
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
Prevention Programs:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • IE/Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
Other necessary Programs:
  • AntiVirus Program<= An AntiVirus program is a must! Whether it is a free version like AVG or Anti-Vir, or a shareware version like Norton or Kapersky, this is a must have.
  • Firewall<= A firewall is definatley a must have. Two good free versions are Sygate and ZoneLabs.
  • More Secure Browser<= Internet Explorer is not the most secure and best browser. There are safer and better alternatives available. I recommend Firefox, however Opera and SlimBrowsers are good as well.
