First let me say thank you in advance for taking the time to help me with my problem. I haven't used Windows in over two years (as a computer science guy I'd much rather be on Linux) but one of my friends has a serious virus problem. In the past I have found that Hijack this is always pretty good at finding problems at the source. The symptoms and steps I have taken to try to resolve the problem are outlined below:
At first, every time I would click on anything, an error message would pop up saying the path was incorrect. This even included things like notepad and the command prompt. Absoluty nothing worked. I then installed the Windows XP SP3 update. During the update, it was unable to find reg.exe because of the aformentioned pathing problem. I assumed the update would fail, but I clicked through all the error messages and the update completed. After I rebooted, the pathing problem was gone. However, I am confident there is still at least one virus on the computer. When I tried to install HijackThis, the installer never came up. I booted into safe mode, but still the installer would not work. I then renamed the installer to a random name, and then the installer started! I was then able to run HijackThis, and I tried to analyze the log using an automated tool online. It found no viruses, as far as I can tell.
EDIT: Two things I forgot to mention. First, each time the computer starts up an error message pops up saying 'ViewMgr' has failed. Also, the virus scan from Network Associates does not pick up any viruses. I'm downloading AVG free now, because I don't know how out of date my friends virus scanner is.
UPDATE: The virus appears to be blocking AVG Free from updating it's virus database. I will try to scan with it, but the database is a few months old.
UPDATE 2: Scanning with an unupdated AVG Free was unsucessful. I have managed to download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware by using Google Cache to get the download link (any popular site that hosted a download would result in a redirect). However, it appears to be blocking the install program from running, even after I rename the install file.

I have not been able to follow the steps in the "You Must Read This Before Posting A Hijackthis Log" because each time I try to go to this forum on the infected computer, it redirects the web browser to a page full of ads. I was not even able to use the online log analyzer. I used pastebin to transfer the log over to another computer.
Any advice would be appreciated!
