My hospital op was postponed - I go in on Friday - all being well (no complications - fingers crossed) I'll be back on Monday.

- I have uninstalled Yahoo toolbar - never use the thing, anyway
- I have updated Java to V6 update 12 - it works fine with Internet Explorer, so I know it's there
- I have updated Firefox to v 3.0.6
- I have run Firefox in Safe Mode

Firefox still resolutely refuses to show the 'Dancing Duke'

Requested some fresh ideas from other techs. Only other idea I have is to try to turn off all programs that are starting at boot up and see if FF and Java works ok. It seems to me there has to be some program that may be blocking Mozilla's FF, but no search came up with anything specific other than what we tried already.

Guess I for got this somewhere along the line, but let's do a complete uninstall of Firefox. Once you use Firefox's Uninstaller from the Programs and Features Utility in Control Panel. Open Windows Explorer (not IE), browse to the Program Files on your hard drive where Mozilla's directory is for FF and delete the entire directory.

If you have Bookmarks you need to save in FF, open the "Organize Bookmarks" window from the Bookmarks menu at top. Click "File" menu and select "Export". Export bookmarks to Desktop or folder of choice.

This what has again been suggested:

also have him go here and get the java and flash plugins for firefox...before he deletes the mozilla folder might want him to save his bookmarks ...he can just drag and drop them back in the profiles folder after the clean install...
another thing is after installing the plugins have him open firefox...close it and reboot twice...don't know why but that trick can get java and flash to start working

You DO have the other plug-ins right?

HappyRock noticed that you are downloading an old version of Java. Didn't you use the links I gave to get the latest version? (My post #7). Here's an alternate site: Java Runtime Environment 1.6.0.12

I have this exact problem, have followed all steps above including uninstalling both Java (6u12) and Firefox (3.06) entirely, running a registry cleaner, and reinstalling both. IE works fine.

Hello RustyDogma, Welcome!

Firstly, GeeksToGo NEVER recommends running any registry cleaner(s). The registry is a delicate piece of Windows, and shouldn't be messed with in less supervised by a trained tech...

Secondly, you should probably start a new topic.. If two people start receiving help in the same topic, things will get confused, and mistakes will be made...

Sorry to have been away - had a heart operation that I was not expecting!! and thanks for your help.

I'm picking up the threads again - but don't have the heart (!) to struggle with Java - it works in IE, so I'll take the easy way out, and switch to IE for anything that needs Java.

Again, thanks for trying - I don't know what it is with me and Java - on a previous computer, I had something very similar - Java just would not work for me, no matter what I tried, for ages. Eventually, we managed something, by going back to an earlier version of Java. For some reason, that worked!!

So - thanks again - I do appreciate the help you gave.

I seem accidentally to have solved my problem!!

Following an entirely different thread, I found Firefox needed Windows Media Player plugin to operate. So I installed that, and on a whim, thought 'I wonder what effect that has had on Java' - and Bingo - the Dancing Duke in all his glory!!!

Sighs. Such is life. And thanks for your time and effort.

WEIRD!! I'm having issues with IE...Java is working fine on Forefox! total opposite issue with me
