I'm just curious if the fan that comes mounted on top of a video card can be replaced. We have one that's starting to make a lot of noise, but the card still works fine. Can that be done, or is it time to just buy a new one?

Hey Greg,

Yah, you can replace the fan on some cards... I've done it on both Nvidia and ATI cards. Depends on what card you're talking about, and whether or not the fan is removable. Which card is it?

ATI 9800XT 256MB AGP...seems like a good card. The guy that's selling it says the fan started getting loud. He oiled it (you can oil it?) to no avail. Then he installed a system blower that "sucks air off the card and out of the case" and says that cools the card much better anyway. I don't know. He's selling it for $20.00. I thought I might be able to replace the fan, but then on the other hand, a bad fan and only $20.00 might be a bad idea.

I have replaced fans on #7 and #17

If the card you're thinking of getting looks like #1, I think you might have a hard time finding a matching fan for it. You might be able to rig something though, but would it be worth it?

It does look like #1 and no, I don't think it would be worth it at this point. I don't want to spend the $$, the time looking for the right fan and mounting it. So I'll pass on that puppy.

Btw, that pic of all those video cards you posted, do you own all those?

If I did they would all be gone by now! I do have one 9800Pro that I've kept as a spare for my daughters computer though.

Well, my 3.06ghz HT CPU should be here tomorrow or Saturday. Once I've installed that, I'll be ready to get a better video card. The GeForce N6600 I've got on this computer will go into my wife's computer. She has a Radeon 9600 PRO now. I'm hoping to get a GeForce 7600GS or GT or, ideally a X1950 PRO for my computer. But I can be patient for the right deal to come along in the local classifieds. Then we'll see how UT 2004 plays.

My wife actually doesn't want me to build a new computer this summer. She feels if I do, I'll really get into gaming and she'll lose me forever :)

Won't happen. Hopefully it won't happen. Well, you can never be too sure, LOL. No, I've promised to be good.
