I've been having a problem with the sound coming from the internet (as it seems a lot of people are). I have a Dell Dimension 8400, I generally use Firefox (although I checked the sound on IE and it wasn't working there either). The problem started a couple of weeks ago. I apparently got a virus, but i ran a bunch of anti-virus programs, and they said they got it at least. Since then I can get sound from CDs games or anything else, just not from the internet. I've searched through the forums here, and tried a bunch of the solutions that worked for other people, but nothing has worked for me. I tried the following

Regedit - (wavemapper was already there, but I readded it)
Installing K-lite Codec and using the Tweak tool
Installing and reinstalling Flash player
Installing the Combined community Codec pack
Checking all the sound options in the Internet Options - Audio tab

And i tried all of the solutions listed in the site below except for 9 because I don't have another computer to copy it from. http://www.codecguid...nd_problems.htm

Also, a number of times i have had an error tell me I don't have a sound device installed. I thought I had downloaded all the drivers and everything, but maybe i did something wrong.

Any thoughts on how to fix this?

You might read THIS posting. However, what you might do is "COMPARE" the registry entry with your own before using the one posted here. Your registry may include some of the same entries, and possibly different ones, so if you use this posted registry key it may break something else on your machine. This is a typical warning anyone should give you when posting about registry fixes.

For the mean time, just see if anything is different before you proceed on, and maybe we can fix it another way.

Download no_sound_in_browsers.reg file to your desktop.
Double click on it, and allow registry merge.
Restart computer.

Thanks for the suggestion, but still no luck. I actually just clicked on the volume icon and it said "the audio device supported by this application is not detected." maybe that little bit of information will help.

Perhaps a sound card driver update? Just a thought.

That's a good suggestion. Check also, if you have any yellow "?", or "!" marks in Device Manager.
