Can you please recommend the safest virus protection program to use with Vista? I downloaded a free trial of Norton 2009 and messed up my computer. Thankfully, my computer had me restore my system and I'm back. I cannot stay "unguarded", but I'm afraid to download one until I can be sure it won't mess me up again. :)

If you installed Norton, make sure, it's totally out of your system. Use Norton Removal Tool: http://service1.syma...005033108162039

Free alternatives:

- Avast! free antivirus: http://filehippo.com...vast_antivirus/
- Avira free antivirus: http://www.free-av.c...load/index.html

- free PC Tools Firewall Plus: http://www.pctools.com/firewall/

- free Comodo Internet Security (firewall + AV): http://www.personalf...all.comodo.com/

If you decide to install Avast, or Avira, make sure, Windows firewall is turned on, or use PC Tools Firewall Plus.
If you decide to install Comodo, make sure, Windows firewall is turned off.

IMPORTANT! Make sure, you use only ONE antivirus, and ONE firewall.

I have a Vista 64bit system and Avast! and Comodo seem to work great on my computers. Comodo, however, does tend to ask a lot of questions when new programs install or begin to run. Picking the 3rd option and running the program in installation mode tends to help with all the questions that Comodo asks. Both are very easy to use and very effective security measures.
