Hi folks,

So I have a new laptop with Windows Vista Business. A week and a half ago I was using Internet Explorer to find a movie on surfthechannel.com. I did a search for the movie and hit enter. Once the results screen came on the website suddenly changed to antivirus2010. It then started saying that I have a virus etc. I closed the window and I did not download antivirus 2010. I checked everywhere to see if antivirus 2010 downloaded and I didn't find anything.

A few days later Symantec/Norton Antivirus started detecting and quarantining temporary files and categorizing them as bloodhound.exploit.213. The first file they quarantined was plugin-pdf.pdf. I looked into the bloodhound.exploit.213 link symantec provided and it indicated that this was a file that compromises older versions of Adobe. It advised me to download Adobe Reader 9 b/c that reader is not affected by the exploit. I thought my problems would go away, but each day SAV alerts me to new quarantined temp files. I cleared my temp data but it doesn't go away. Now the quarantined files are not .pdf files they are .tmp files.

All of the files start DWH(insert #'s or letters).tmp. Right now I have 108 quarantined DWH.tmp files and 1 quarantined .pdf file. It is getting ridiculous, but it doesn't feel like my computer is compromised in any way. It is still running quickly etc. But I am at a loss for what to do.

I will now include my malawarebytes and hijackthis log files

Hello JQ Public,

Welcome to Geekstogo.

One thing. Please just paste your logs straight into the forum. Putting them in quotes can be confusing as we often do that when we are replying with scripts etc.

Now
  • Please download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from here.
  • It is important that it is saved to your desktop.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt (<<will be maximized) and info.txt (<<will be minimized)

Note: Unless otherwise instructed always post the logs in the forum. If reports don't fit on one post. It might be necessary to break the logs up to get them on the forum. Just use as many posts as you need, that's fine. :)

Hi Emeraldnzl. Thanks! I wasn't sure how long you wanted the program to look back so I just did the default 1 month. So here ya go. The first is log.txt and the second is info.txt

Well nothing really leaping out at me there.

Lets do this.

It is a pretty big download at 28mb's but is very useful at detecting\cleaning rootkits or whatever it finds.

Please click here to download AVP Tool by Kaspersky.
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Reboot your computer into SafeMode.

You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears.
Use your up arrow key to highlight SafeMode then hit enter
    .

  • Double click the setup file to run it.
  • Click Next to continue.
  • It will by default install it to your desktop folder.Click Next.
  • Hit ok at the prompt for scanning in Safe Mode.
  • It will then open a box There will be a tab that says Automatic scan.
  • Under Automatic scan make sure these are checked.

  • System Memory
  • Startup Objects
  • Disk Boot Sectors.
  • My Computer.
  • Also any other drives (Removable that you may have)

After that click on Security level then choose Customize then click on the tab that says Heuristic Analyzer then choose Enable Deep rootkit search then choose ok.
Then choose OK again then you are back to the main screen.

  • Then click on Scan at the to right hand Corner.
  • It will automatically Neutralize any objects found.
  • If some objects are left un-neutralized then click the button that says Neutralize all
  • If it says it cannot be Neutralized then chooose The delete option when prompted.
  • After that is done click on the reports button at the bottom and save it to file, name it Kas.
  • Save it somewhere convenient like your desktop and just post only the detected Virus\malware in the report it will be at the very top under Detected post those results in your next reply.

Note: This tool will self uninstall when you close it so please save the log before closing it.

Hi Emerald. I have a conundrum!?

Here is what it showed...

Detected
--------
Status Object
------ ------

Events
------
Time Name Status Reason

There is more after 'events', but I think you wanted the info under detected. There doesn't seem to be anything there.

One new thing I've noticed is the quarantining of a Symantec program file. It is an APQ.tmp file. The file is located in C:\ProgramData\Symantec\SRTSP\Quarantine\

Could this be some sort of false positive?

Thanks!

No that scan will pick up malware even if it is in quarantine.

I expect that log has gone.

Bit hard to tell what it picked up.

I guess seeing we don't have anything to go on the question must be to you.

How is your computer working now? Are you still experiencing problems?

My computer is fine, but currently Auto-protect w/ SAV has 477 files quarantined and more keep coming everyday! Since they keep popping up it gives me an uneasy feeling.

Do you know anything about antivirus 2010? All I read about is 2009.

I have attached a picture of what I'm seeing everyday. All these pop up as new files each day. It is really weird.

Is it ok if I post the whole log from that Kapersky thing?

Thanks!

Yes please, exactly what I was looking for.

If it is very long you may have to split it and use more posts. That's fine. :)

Do you know anything about antivirus 2010

It's just another in that long list of rogue anti-virus progams that install a whole lot of rubbish on your computer.

Not showing up on your machine though. Might have been stopped when it tried to get on.

My computer is fine, but currently Auto-protect w/ SAV has 477 files quarantined and more keep coming everyday! Since they keep popping up it gives me an uneasy feeling

Once they are in quarantine they cannot hurt your machine. Most anti-spyware programs have a way to delete quarantined items. Perhaps you could do that.

Depends on which version of Symantec you have but here are the instructions for Symantec 9 or 10

How to delete a quarantined file if it is not needed:
  • Open the Symantec AntiVirus console.
  • To view the Quarantine list, open the View menu, and select Quarantine.
  • If there are any items present in the Quarantine list, select them and press the red "X" button above the list. This will delete the infected file(s) from your computer.
  • When you are finished, close Symantec AntiVirus and reboot your computer.
I also wonder whether these are mostly cookies.

These are harmless but often picked up by anti-spyware programs and quarantined.

Sites put these on your computer when you visit. Go to this link http://en.wikipedia....iki/HTTP_cookie for information about cookies.

While they are harmless I don't leave them on my computer forever. You can instruct your browser to delete them after a period.

In Firefox you can go to Tools > Options > Privacy and you will see some check boxes and a panel where you can set the period you want to keep cookies for.

In Internet Explorer go to Tools > Internet Options > General and if you look under Browsing History you will see a button to Delete. Clicking on the Delete button will lead you to a panel where you can delete Cookies. There is another button called Settings. Click on that and you will be presented with a panel with options to look at what cookies are stored on your machine.

Now I think your machine is clean.

That Kaspersky one found nothing.

We have a couple of last steps to perform and then you're all set.Posted Image

Please go here to download OTCleanIt.

Run this program to remove the tools we have been using.

You will be asked to reboot the machine to finish the Cleanup process choose Yes.

MBAM can be uninstalled via control panel add/remove but it may be a useful tool to keep. HijackThis can be uninstalled via the Add or Remove Programs utility in the Control Panel.

Next, we need to clean your restore points and set a new one:

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs from changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected)1. Turn off System Restore. On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
2. Restart your computer.

3. Turn ON System Restore. On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
[/list]System Restore will now be active again.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A reminder now: Remember to turn back on any anti-malware programs you may have turned off during the cleaning process.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now that you are clean here are some things I think are worth having a look at:

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Be sure and give the Temp folders a cleaning out now and then. This helps with security and your computer will run more efficiently. I clean mine once a week. For ease of use, you might consider the following free program:--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A great way to check that your Microsoft and Java have the latest updates is to go to Software Inspector at Secunia.

I do this weekly. Not only do they tell you which programs need updating but they give you the link to follow.

To bolster your security go to Secunia.com to ensure essential programs are up to date.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Make Internet Explorer more secure
  • Click Start > Run
  • Type Inetcpl.cpl & click OK
  • Click on the Security tab
  • Click Reset all zones to default level
  • Make sure the Internet Zone is selected & Click Custom level
  • In the ActiveX section, set the first two options ("Download signed and unsigned ActiveX controls) to "Prompt", and ("Initialize and Script ActiveX controls not marked as safe") to "Disable".
  • Next Click OK, then Apply button and then OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
* MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well known ad sites and other bad sites. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer, meaning it will be difficult to infect yourself in the future.

* Consider using an alternate browser. Mozilla's Firefox browser is excellant; it is much more secure than Internet Explorer, immune to almost all known browser hijackers, and also has the best built-in pop up blocker (Note: this as an added benefit!) that I have seen. Firefox is my default browser but I retain Internet Explorer as well so that I can access the very few sites that require it.

Firefox may be downloaded from Here

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Startuplite is a tool to help you stop some programs not needed when you start your computer from loading. They will begin automatically only when needed.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

To help protect your computer in the future here are some free programs you can look at:

To learn more about how to protect yourself while on the internet read this article by Tony Klein: So how did I get infected in the first place?

Have a safe and happy computing day!

I'm sorry, but I think something is wrong. Today there were a TON of files that were flagged in Auto-protect. Instead of SAV quarantining these files...the files are being "Left Alone". What does this mean? I have never seen the flagged programs left alone. Should I take the computer into a shop? What kind of store would help with virus infection? Is there anything else I can do? Thanks!

Best thing I think is to have another look.

You may have used Malwarebytes before. If you have and still have it on your machine please update and run. Post the scan report back here.

If you do not have Malwarebytes please download from Here or Here

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.
Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediatly.

Next
  • Please download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from here.
  • It is important that is saved to your desktop.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt (<<will be maximized) and info.txt (<<will be minimized)
So when you return please post
  • MBAM log
  • the two RSIT logs - log.txt and info.txt

Note: Unless otherwise instructed always post the logs in the forum. It is likely these reports will not fit on one post. It might be necessary to break the logs up to get them on the forum. Just use as many posts as you need, that's fine. :)

Not seeing anything unusual there.

Lets try a rootkit scanner.

Download GMER from here:

http://www.gmer.net/files.php

Unzip it to the desktop.

**Caution**
These types of scans can produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<--- ROOKIT" entries unless advised by a trained Security Analyst.

Open the program and click on the Rootkit tab.
Make sure all the boxes on the right of the screen are checked, EXCEPT for ‘Show All’.
Click on Scan.
When the scan has run click Copy and paste the results (if any) into this thread.
