there are several other symptoms actually:
-after the first couple reboots, it said IE was not set as default browser, and asked if i would like to make it so...after either response the nonfuctioning window opens...now it has stopped asking me (presumably after a few adaware and spybot scans) but the broken window still opens at every startup.
-Norton Internet Security are gone/do not work, but their program files remain
-Actual folders are slow/difficult to to close (music pictures work fine)
-double clicking of dsktop shortcuts doesn't work (the icon fades to ghostlike), but they still open via right click
-quick launch bar keeps disappearing on its own
-a couple times I have gotten the messages "Due to an identified problem, windows cannot display windows firewall settings" and "windows security center has detected suspicious activity of your internet connection"
-"Mycomputer" and "MyNetworkConnections" are now simply labeled as "folder"
-some other start menu items either have been renamed to "folder", have a folder picture in front them where the usual icon should be (control panel), or are missing completely (search, run, help center, etc.)
-add/remove programs list is blank, so i could delete nothing that way
-javaij32.exe and apizr.exe could not be ffound (good or bad?)
-favorites folder had an html shortcut titled www.7days.ws and a subfolder titled "sites about" with multiple html linked product ads
CWS shredder didn't seem to catch anything, winpatrol and spyware blaster refused to install...Spybot and AdAware deleted a few things like always, but the only symptom they cleared i believe was the last one with the favorites folder.
(Quick sidenote, I also ran AVG, which found a virus called VBS/Psyme that infected the file C:\windows\tmp.hta. the file is currently in AVG vault, heal failed. how do i fix it?)
and this is where my computer stands at the moment- still very problematic. I have left my internet unplugged on my pc, since I dont want further hijacking. I am posting from a pals computer...
I've spent all day frustrated and confused, now HijackThis is my last resort. here is my HJT log:
