In Spybot S&D click Tools > Resident and remobve the checkmark before Teatimer.

That usually works.

Then doubleclick BHwoes.reg (the file we made). Confirm you want to merge it with the registry.

Then reboot and post a new log.

unchecked the resident icon, and it stayed unchecked after reboot...strange though b/c teatimer.exe is still in the processes tab under task manager :tazz:

Close all windows except HijackThis and click Fix checked:

currently I am stuck in safe mode, i cannot find the messenger plus folder. in program files there is a folder entitled "messenger" and another entitled "Microsoft Plus! Digital Media Edition", but no "messenger plus" folder

I do a scan and then try to checkmark the "RPC apizr.exe thing" and fix it, and then it comes right back when i rescan with HJT a minute later...symptoms are still the same overall...perhaps we should just start deleting things and getting replacement programs that are not infected, aka a new IE, new explorer.exe file??

Go to start >Run and type
cmd
Press enter

When the Command-prompt comes up type or paste in this command and press enter:

sc GetKeyName "Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Helper"

It will give the a name for the service.

Type sc delete A space and then the name you got from the 1st command. Press enter.
You should get a success message.

If not, then the key name has some character which sc cannot translate. Let me know.

oops, before ur last post i had decided to try regedt32 as a new task, i simply deleted that whole folder with the weird characters associated with rpc helper, but then i tried what u said and here's what happened...

first i typed: sc GetKeyName "Remote Procedure Call (RPC) helper, it replied:

[sc] getservicekeyname FAILED 1060: The specified service does not exist as an installed service.
required bufsize = 500

then i typed: sc"Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Helper" and it said it was not recognized as an internal or external command, or as an operable program or batch file

then i rebooted in normal mode and ran HJT and there was no RPC present! Unfortunately, IE still doesn't work :tazz:

this is one crazy infection...is reformatting/reinstalling windows xp my only option left? here is the hjt log and thanks again:

Please open an IE window and let me know what exactly you get.

Immediately afterwards, click Start, Control Panel, Performance and Maintenance, Administrative Tools, Event Viewer, Application and let me know if there are any warning or errors in the list for the time that you opened that IE window.

the middle of the window is completely blank, it doesn'say "page cannot be displayed" or anything like that....the address bar is missing, but it says "http://www.google.com/ - Microsoft Internet Explorer" in the blue strip at the top of the window...the search, favorites, and history buttons open up their respective boxes when i press them, but no other buttons respond, and neither do the menu words up top...when i say they dont respond i dont mean they freeze up, they just dont do anything...

it does not let me in to administrative tools through control panel, even though i can access every other part of the performance and maintenance section just fine...so i got in through C:/docs and settings/allusers/...programs/admintools

when i try clicking on event viewer, or any other shortcut in the admin tools folder, i get that same message:

"MMC cannot open the file C:/windows/system32/eventvwr.msc...this may be because the file does not exist, is not an mmc console, or was created by a later version of mmc. this may also be because you do not have sufficient access rights to the file"

im telling you, the only user name on my computer is administrator, and that is me and has always been me...

if i try to create a new user name, which i suspect is what must be done, i can't because access to "user accounts" via control panel is blocked...

also, in control panel i switched to classic view, and i noticed an icon listed first (right before accessibility options) which has no label or wording under it, and it is the icon of a blank page (like the one in ms word's toolbar up top to click new document) only it has a tiny little window in it...i tried deleting it but it wont let me, i KNOW it doesn't belong there! :tazz:

i am willing to take drastic measures now if possible...please let me know how i can do this, thanks again.

First try the system file checker (if you haven't already)

Click Start > Run > type or copy&paste sfc /scannow > OK

Windows will check for the presence of all important system files and if they are the correct version and have not been corrupted.
It will prompt you for the XP CD if it finds one that needs to be replaced.
