I was working with a DV Camera attached to my system. The 1394 port would not respond. This inturn caused the main "My Computer" to hang. I can open hard drives from the run command but
have lost the ability to have the desktop show up after login? This problem exists in both safe mode
and run mode. At the moment the only way I can get the explorer to open is by using the task manager. In old 3.1 days you could edit your windows.ini to edit your boot sequence. I am puzzled how I got here. As for the 1394 port issue I have removed the card from the system as the suspect problem but the "my computer" icon is does not display correctly.

I did read a microsoft fix for Windows Image Acquisition (WIA). I did find this running in run mode and not running in safe mode. So it is possible this has been cured. So I am back to the main issue of
not getting a desktop after login.

I have norton anti-virus installed, I have run Lavasoft checking for worms or trogans non found.

Hope to hear back on this one

Thx Busyguy

Yes, once completed several applications need to be re-installed. I will try going back a time further. At the moment this problem is only limited to this issue which is a bummer.

1. If you have Windows CD, follow the steps from here: http://icrontic.com/...pair_windows_xp

2. If you don't have Windows CD...
Download Windows Recovery Console: http://www.thecomput...om/files/rc.iso
Download, and install free Imgburn: http://www.imgburn.c...hp?act=download
Using Imgburn, burn rc.iso to a CD.
Boot to the CD...let it finish loading.
When the "Welcome to Setup" screen appears, press R to start the Recovery Console.
Then, follow the steps from here: http://icrontic.com/...pair_windows_xp, starting below this picture on page 1:

Broni, Question within the Repair section which app will I use?
I have tried fixmbr, fixboot neither of these helped. I did try the restore and the system kept indicating can't restore so whatever I am doing from here is from an external source.

I have replaced the drive with a backup drive I did a couple of months back. System is running normal. All tricks trying to use either restore or repair did not get me to the correct end state. So I would suggest for those people with extremely large hard drives over 500 gig to create a backup. My tool of choice is Seagate drive replace software. The trick is to make sure the drive you are backing up and the replacement are the same manufacturer. Points of caution, may sure the primary drive is only a single partition and the backup drive is at least as large if not larger then the drive you will back up. I am sure the software can handle drives with multiple partitions I just like to keep it simple.

Thanks
