Hi,

Windows XP, with all SP updated.

Avast just says "hidden Rootkit" and it's recommended option is to Ignore. Does not give me a name
I have done a boot scan and system restore, but to no avail.
Trend Micro online says TROJ_KRYPTIK.QS
Counter Spy found nothing.

I'm too scared to delete the file in case it ruins my system. However, I'm also very apprehensive using my computer with this malware running somewhere in the background :)

Thanks for your quick response :)

I decided to attach all the files since they were all so long; I hope that's ok.

Please don't attach logs unless requested.. Just post logs as it is.. Post each log in separate post.. It will be much easier for my eyes..

IMPORTANT!! Uninstall these programs first (if present..) so that they won't interfere with our fixes..

Looks awesome... Lets do one last scan to make sure we don't miss any...

Please download Dr.Web CureIt to the Desktop:
  • Please reboot into Safe Mode
  • Once you are in Safe Mode, double-click the launch.exe or cureit.exe file and Allow to run the express scan
  • This will scan the files currently running in memory and when something is found, click the yes button when it asks you if you want to cure it. This is only a short scan.
  • Once the short scan has finished, please do a re-scan.. This time, choose Complete Scan
  • Click the green arrow button at the right, and the scan will start.
  • After the scan finished, click Select all
  • Click on Cure and choose Move incurable
  • When the scan has finished, in the menu, click File and choose Save report list
  • Save the report to your Desktop. The report will be called DrWeb.csv
  • Close Dr.Web Cureit. Reboot your PC in Normal Mode, and post DrWeb.csv in your next reply (Open it as Notepad)

How's the computer now?.. Still got delay upon rebooting? :)

Sorry for the delay in replying.

Unfortunately this last step is not working for me. The scan takes a long time (understandable, as I have nearly 500gb of data) and it does pick up a few other suspicious objects (including false positives, e.g. VNC), but as the scan finishes, it 'crashes', as Windows pop ups with that Cureit has an error. I have tried twice to do a complete scan, but it's not sucessful.

Please note that I am currently away from my computer and will be until Sunday night (Australian EST), so I won't be able to copy any logs or error messages.

Thanks for your help thus far.

Edit: Another few files I remember Cureit alerted me was C:\windows\options\cabs\_desktop.ini (can't remember what the apparent virus was), a Kazza Supernodes program (I could probably just delete/uninstall this program, since I don't use it anymore) and some old java files.

Computer seems good. No more pop ups. I couldn't get a successful CureIt scan, however Avast hasn't detected anything further, even though CureIt said it did.

Unfortunately, my brother's computer seems to have been affected as well (not sure if by same affliction) and he went the reformat route.
A strange thing I remember, was a few days ago, Windows Security popped up and said Windows Firewall was not turned on. I thought that was a bit strange and I sort of just left the message and chose the "Let me manage it myself" option. In a hurry, I thought, I must have not had it on for a reason; I thought maybe I had something else for my firewall... The malware must have switched off my Windows firewall :)

Fenzodahl512, I'm curious as to what actually infected my computer. Do you have any ideas?

Thanks for all your help :)

Ok.. First of all, since you have the firewall problem, lets do another scan...

Please make sure you disable ALL of your Antivirus/Antispyware/Firewall before running ComboFix.. Please visit HERE if you don't know how.. Please re-enable them back after performing all steps given..

Please download ComboFix by sUBs from one of the locations below, and save it to your Desktop.

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts. Please, never rename Combofix unless instructed.

If ComboFix asked you to install Recovery Console, please do so.. It will be your best interest..

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log and a fresh HijackThis log in your next reply..

Note: DON'T do anything with your computer while ComboFix is running.. Let ComboFix finishes its job..

My Windows Firewall is actually on at the moment. I think after removing infected svchost.exe with Malbyteware's, the firewall was turned back on.
Will I still need to run ComboFix?

Nope.. And since you have about 500gb of data in your hard disk, I believe you can do a full scan with your own antivirus..

About Windows firewall, I want to recommend you a better and yet easy to use firewall..

PC Tools Firewall Plus

Well, there's a lot of free third party firewall out there, and the best in my personal opinion would be Comodo Firewall, but for the sake of easy to use, I just recommend everyone PC Tools Firewall..

Lets do some cleanup...

Please download OTCleanIt and save it to Desktop.
  • Make sure you have internet connection..
  • Double-click OTCleanIt.exe
  • Click the CleanUp! button.
  • Select Yes when the "Begin cleanup Process?" prompt appears.
  • If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes

Thanks for all your time and help. Good to know that I won't have to run ComboFix.
I have run the OTCleanIt.

Computer seems to be functioning fine and have not received any anti-virus pop-ups since using Malwarebyte's. I've done a few reboots and it seems ok. I'll have a read through of the links you've posted, as well.

Once again, thank you :)
