Yes, the drive (letter) was C.
I will say I am 99.9% sure only because I must post to you from my work PC and I did this on my infected home PC at 2am this morning.
But I do remember everything going according to description and C was the letter.

Alright, here's what I'd like you to do. Follow the directions that I posted before on how to get into the alternate recovery console. Once you are in the recovery console, take out the cd from the cdrom and replace it with your Windows XP installation disk. Then, type the following.

expand D:\I386\WINLOGON.EX_ C:\WINDOWS\winlogon.exe
expand D:\I386\WINLOGON.EX_ C:\WINDOWS\winlogon2.exe

Make sure that you do both commands. If that command does not work, change the letter to E, then to F if E does not work. Once you have done that, please report back with the results.

It said unable to create file winlogon.exe.
Same message for both files.
Even when I went directly to my g: drive and tried it didn't work.

Alright, let's just double check to make sure that we are giving this our best efforts.

Please grab a piece of paper and a pen and be prepared to write some things on it.
Please boot back to the Recovery Console then follow the below procedures.

Type C: then type dir and see if a folder named WINDOWS is located there.
If Yes, then write this on the paper: Drive C:\ is my Primary partition.
If Not, type D: then type dir and check for the same folder.
(Try this with the drive letters: C: D: E: F: G: H: I: J: K: )

Once you have found your primary partition, we're going to find the DVD-Player.
Type C: then type dir and see if a folder named I386 is located there.
If Yes, then write this on the paper: Drive D:\ is my DVD-Player.
If Not, type D: and type dir and check for the same folder.
(Try this with the drive letters: C: D: E: F: G: H: I: J: K: )

Once you have found both, We need to use this command (using the values we just found)

expand {DVD}:\I386\WINLOGON.EX_ <space> {Primary}:\WINDOWS\winlogon2.exe

In the above command, replace the following values.
{DVD} with the drive letter of the DVD Player
{Primary} with the drive letter of the Primary Partition
<space> with a space character.

Thank you again for your reply.
In an effort to not waste an entire day, since I can basically only correspond online from work, let me respond.
Please know I am in NO WAYS trying 2 sound snippy or curt at all. This is only to help you in helping me.
I am somewhat computer savvy. C is my primary partition where windows and 95% of my computer data is held. I have a small partition at D, E is my ZIP drive, and F and G are my DVD-R drives.
When you first asked me to copy winlogon.exe to winlogon2.exe in my windows folder and it didn't work, I looked in the windows directory and saw there was no winlogon.exe to make a copy from in the first place.
I thought your next suggestion to expand those files directly from the cd would truly work, but it didn't. I assure you though that the reason it didn't is not because I don't know my drive letters.
What I was actually going to do was expand those same files onto the thumb drive that I have been keeping all these utilities you have recommended and then copy/move them directly into my windows folder.
Do you think that will work? Do you have an alternative if it does not?

No offense intended Joel, we have to gear our speeches to everyone. I believe the problem lies with the destination drive here. I've never seen the error "unable to create file" from the recovery console. Let's give this a try.

Boot up into the recovery console and once there type chkdsk c:\ /r Assuming of course that C:\ is your hard disk.

Once finished, reboot back into the recovery console, and try to expand the files again.

Let me know the results.

I was finally able to copy winlogon.exe and winlogon2.exe to my windows directory.
I still was not able to login to windows. As soon as I logged I was immediately logged out.
Sorry it seems like I am really putting you to the test.
Thank you again for your assistance.

Joel, I'm thinking that our next step here should be an in-place repair of Windows XP. This will repair WindowsXP while still keeping all of your personal data. See the link below for a guide on how to do an in-place repair.

*Heavy Sigh*
Please don't hate me. Hate my virus!
I did the repair. Seemed to work without problem.
Restarted and went into regular windows mode.
Instead of the login dialog box with the username and password, it gave me the welcome screen where I can just click on my profile and enter.
When I clicked my profile, it seemed to work as I saw my desktop and the hourglass, but I soon was logged back out to the welcome screen.
I went into Recovery Console and did the copy C:\windows\winlogon.exe C:\windows\winlogon2.exe.
Tried to log into normal windows and it didn't work. (my profile or admin)
I tried to login to safe mode. Didn't work.
Went back into Recovery Console and did expand d:\i386\winlogon.ex_ c:\windows\ and then copy C:\windows\winlogon.exe C:\windows\winlogon2.exe. Both worked.
I tried logging into safe mode again, and again as soon as I logged in I was logged back out.
*heavy sigh*
What next?
Again, THANK YOU for your help and patience with me and my computer.

*As tears roll down my cheeks*
One of the WORST questions you could ask.
Files, or programs?
90% of my FILES are on a portable HD.
I just have so many programs.
But, essentially, if I HAD 2, I could reload my programs.
Why do U ask sir?
