Cannot get my xbox 360 connected and/or cannot stay connected for more than 1 minute at a time.
(Sometimes it will sporadically connect for short periods if I am lucky.)

My ISP is Charter Communications.
I have a terayon tj715 modem.
I have a netgear wrg164 V7 wireless g router.
The router is directly connected to the modem which then has the xbox 360 connected to it through port 1,
and my windows xp desktop connected to it through port 2. The computer always gets a connection, without fail. The xbox hardly ever or rarely snags a connection. I've tried opening ports, forwarding ports, using dmz servers, assigning static ip's and nothing seems to work. About 5 minutes ago the xbox 360 obtained a internet connection after I hard resetted the router. I obtained as much information as I could during that time before it promptly disconnected me like it always does.

Update: Tried hard resetting the router again and the computer automatically took the IP Address 192.168.1.2
and the Xbox 360 didnt connect at all. So strange, i'm telling you.

Have you tried plugging the X-Box directly into the modem (for troubleshooting purposes) and seeing if it can acquire an connection?

I would suggest a power-cycle just to ensure all of your equipment is in-sync.

• Turn off all computers/devices (including your X-Box) that are connected to your router.
• Unplug the power from your modem.
• Unplug the power from your router.
• Wait two minutes.
• Plug your modem's power back in; wait for your modem to boot up (this can take up to two minutes).
• Plug your router's power back in; wait for your router to boot up (this can take up to two minutes).
• Turn on your computers/devices, and see if the X-Box is able to connect to the router, and acquire a connection.

What IP address did you forward the ports to?

Have you updated your router to the latest firmware?

What IP address did you forward the ports to?

Is your router XBox certified? If not you may need to open the proper ports.

Those are the ports I set up, reserved an IP address for 192.168.1.3 with the xbox's personal mac address and turned UPNP off so I could actually successfully forward ports. None of this is working, I hate networking with a passion. I never had to set anything up for my roommates xbox 360. Power cycling didnt work either.

Also, i've tried connecting my xbox to my modem directly and the xbox gives me the same diagnostic it does when I plug it into the router. It always says, "Cannot obtain ip address from your modem or router. Your modem or router may not be assigning an ip address. You can try assigning a static ip address instead." When I try a static ip address it never works, because my router has built in DHCP but it still isnt assigning ip's. It also suggests that my router may be filtering out my consoles mac address but my router has no filters set up. Im at my wits end, about to toss everything out the window.

One more thing, tried setting up port forwarding this way as well.

Strange. If it was a router configuration issue, connecting directly into the modem really should have worked. Have you tested your Ethernet cable to ensure it is working properly? Try swapping the cable from your computer to your X-Box and seeing if it works. More importantly, see if your X-Box's Ethernet cable works when connected to your computer (i.e. you get an Internet connection). Just as a note, it would be a good idea to power cycle your equipment when swapping the cables, just to be on the safe side.

I did notice that you actually got a connection when your X-Box had an IP of 192.168.1.2 -- for this reason I don't think this is a port forwarding issue, since it doesn't seem to matter what IP your X-Box has.

It's rare, but it could be a faulty Ethernet cable. You seem to be pretty computer-savvy, so I'm guessing you've done some in-depth troubleshooting on this. I just think it's odd that you can't get a connection via a direct X-Box to modem connection. Did you switch off the modem when you connected the two? Does your ISP use PPPoE (i.e. do you login with a username/password)?

I've done so much troubleshooting, I had to deal with the frustrating limited connectivity of Windows Vista when my roommate was living with me and did some troubleshooting here and there when I had windows 98. I've tried switching ethernet cables but I never power cycled when I did so which might have been the problem. I can give it a shot and try and see if the xbox's ethernet cord works directly from modem to computer. I'll update after I try.
