Hello. I am having issues with programs that have been either installed or updated in the last month or so not connecting to the internet. I first noticed this when I cleaned my computer of Norton and installed COMODO Firewall and AntiVir to protect my computer. AnitVir was the first program I noticed that won't connect. Since then I have installed various other programs that will not connect to the internet as well as updated Mozilla Firefox earlier this week and began having problems connecting. I am currently running on a Acer Laptop with Windows Vista (32-bit edition) connected wirelessly to a Linksys Router. I have ran both Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and SUPERAntiSpyware with success. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hey sk8er982002,

Have you tried restarting your computer in Safe mode with Networking and seeing if the programs can connect to the Internet?

If they can, please download and run the Norton Removal Tool -- once it is finished, restart your computer. Can the programs now connect to the Internet (in normal mode)?

Still no luck. When I booted up into Safe Mode with Networking, my laptop wouldn't connect at all. It would try to but give me the Limited Connectivity message and no programs would connect. Ran the Norton Removal Tool and still no connection for the programs that haven't been connecting to begin with.

Did you try to connect via Wireless, or wired? Unfortunately, wireless access in Safe Mode with Networking generally won't work; try connecting with an Ethernet cable.

If you need to connect via Wireless, you could check to see if the Wireless Zero Configuration utility is started when in safe mode; to do so, please do the following:
  • Press Start
  • Select Run
  • Type services.msc and press OK
  • In the new window, scroll down to Wireless Zero Configuration (it'll be at the bottom) and ensure that it has a status of Started -- if it does not, start it.
I have a feeling that you have some security software causing you grief. Hence why I would like to see if you can get a connection in Safe Mode with Networking.

Please download HijackThis and install it -- restart your computer. Once the computer starts up, can you please launch HijackThis and then select the option Open the Misc Tools section -- select Generate StartupList log. Save the startup list in a safe location. Now select the option Open Uninstall Manager and then click Save list -- save it to a safe location. Please post the contents of the startup list and the uninstall list in your next response.

I have a feeling that you are right about some security software causing this. I've tried uninstalling some programs (like COMODO) but I cannot pinpoint the sorce of it.

I can't really see any overly problematic programs running on your computer; the only thing I'm thinking right now is that it's possible that if Norton wasn't completely uninstalled, then when you installed your new anti-virus, there may have been a conflict. I would recommend uninstalling all security software on your computer and then reboot your computer to see if you can connect to the Internet?

Another thing to check would be to ensure the Windows Firewall isn't running (goto Start --> Run --> type services.msc and press OK -- in the list of services, ensure the firewall does not have a status of Started.

I'm really surprised you can't connect to the Internet whilst in Safe mode with Networking, even when wired. That just seems plain odd to me :)

I am having almost the exact problem. I am using an acer laptop and a few weeks ageo tryed to install firefox 3. When I ndid it stoped working (firefox that is). And now nohting will connect to the internet excpt for IE and AIM. Im running Vista. I have tryed uninstalling and re-installing firefox and updating it, with no sucess. I have changed all the settings I know of in firefox and in vista reguarding internet connections. I have updated everything i can think of on the computer and nohting has worked.

So in summary, only IE and AOL instant messanger works, nothing else connects to the internet. Any ideas?

(P.S. If this is in the wrong place, or I messed something up please tell me. I just joined, thanks.)

I am having the exact same problem. Firefox was working until it automatically updated and now it won't connect. Old internet explorer and aim both work however. I tried to update internet explorer and it did not work so I restored my computer. I am running an HP with Windows Vista 32 bit. I tried removing Norton to put on Windows One Care. That is when I first noticed it. Windows One Care tells me it can't connect to the internet to finish installing. I've turned off firewalls and have tried everything. I can't figure out why it will no longer connect. Any suggestions? Please!
