when i run window file protection, it asks for windows disk, which is my dell service pack disk. The disk is service pack 1a. The windows file protection tells me that i need to install service pack 3 disk which i do not have.

I assume you're running sfc /scannow.
Do you have the SP3 update installed?

You will probably have to point the File Checker to the service pack files.
GO HERE for a good article on how to run it without having to insert a CD.
