Can't Update AVG Free Version 7.5

Whenever I try I get a message that the program cannot connect to the server. I have updated many times previously with no problem. I have performed all the actions in the "before you post read this" message.

One thought that occurs to me is to uninstall v7.5 and install v8.0. Not sure if that would help, but I wondered if you would recommend that course of action.

Well yes. 7.5 has been superseded.

Further, you have an infection that is not designated by MBAM. Interesting, it may be a new one.

Lets do this

Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:

NOTE: If you are guest watching this topic. ComboFix is a very powerful tool. The disclaimer clearly states that you should not use it without supervision. There is good reason for this as ComboFix can, and sometimes does, run into conflict on a computer and render it unusable.

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop
  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools.
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

An update. I was able to install AVG 8.0 (I did a scan and it came up clean). Interestingly when I exited Ad-Aware I was still unable to install AVG, but when I left it running and disabled Adwatch, the installation worked.

At any rate, I am not home at the moment, but will run combofix when I get there. That is, unless you tell me that the clean AVG scan means I don't have to.

Encouraging that AVG8 didn't find anything.

Up to you really, I am suspicious of that MBAM one and if it were me I would want to check to make sure.

If you do decide to run ComboFix you will need to disable AVG8 Resident Shield.

How to disable AVG's Resident Shield.

Right click the AVG icon and click Open.

In the Overview panel click on Resident Sheild > Uncheck the Resident Sheild Active box > Save Changes.

Even when I uncheck resident shield, it still shows as active on the overview screen and combofix is telling me that AVG Anti Virus Free is active and I should disable it.

I don't know if you have this but if you have lets see if doing this makes a difference.

How to disable the AVG8 Security Toolbar

Internet Explorer - use the mouse right-click on the toolbar and check-off the AVGTOOLBAR option in the list

Mozilla Firefox - Tools menu -> Add-ons. Find the AVG Toolbar here and click on the Disable button.
