Can't login to Linksys router's default IP address

Heya,

I am trying to access the web setup page for my Linksys router and have been frustrated with my attempts to login. This is what is happening.

I am wanting to configure my router for OpenDNS, which requires some changes to the router settings. My understanding is that Linksys routers all have the default IP address http://192.168.1.1, however mine does not. I used the Command Prompt to check the Default Gateway and found the IP address listed there was different than http://192.168.1.1 How that happened, I have no idea. I used a paper clip to press the reset button on the router for 30 seconds hoping it would reset the router back to its default settings, therefore back to http://192.168.1.1 That did not work. I tried it again by unplugging the router for 60 seconds, but I still show the same IP address and not the default address that should be there.

When I type in the Default Gateway IP address in a browser window's address bar, I do get prompted for a user name and password. I leave the user name blank and type 'admin' into the password field, however when I press OK it just pops up the same user name and password prompt and asks for the information all over again.

I have been to Linksys' website and did not find anything helpful there. According to their troubleshooting information, when I reset the router the IP address should be reset to the default. That is not happening.

Any ideas?

P.S. This is not a wireless setup.

Hey konakula29er,

Although 192.168.1.1 may be the default IP, it is not uncommon for this to be changed. For example, many modems now-a-days split their external interface from the internal interface; for this reason, the modem would usually assign the IP 192.168.1.1 to its internal interface. This would result in your router defaulting to the IP 192.168.2.1 -- is this the IP that is listed as your Default Gateway? It may not be exactly that; it depends on your router.

My point? You're doing the right thing when you enter your Default Gateway's IP into your address bar :) Since you've reset the router, the default username/password should be working.

Some common Linksys username/password combos are:

<blank>/admin
<blank>/password
admin/admin
admin/password

If none of these work, please post the exact make and model of your Linksys router.

Thanks for the reply. The Linksys router I have is model RT31P2 with 3 Ethernet ports and 2 Phone ports (I have never used the phone ports). I have two computers networked via the router. The Default Gateway address is 192.168.15.1 while the IP address is 192.168.15.100. I believe it is the Default Gateway address I'm supposed to use to access the router settings.
I tried the username/password combos you provide without any luck. I know I've accessed the router settings before, but it has been a long time ago.

Yes, 192.168.15.1 is a normal Linksys IP, so you are right.

The username/password combination you used from the start is correct for your router (blank username, password for password), so it appears that your router is not truly being reset. I'm going to post two different methods of resetting your router; if the first doesn't work, try the second.

Reset #1:
  • Ensure that power is plugged into your router, and it is turned on.
  • Hold down the reset button for 30 seconds.
  • Unplug the power from your router, and wait 60 seconds.
  • Plug your computer into your router's Ethernet port 1.
  • Plug power back into your router; wait for it to start up (this can take up to two minutes).
  • Try to connect to the router using the default username/password -- ensure you try a few different Internet Browsers (i.e. Internet Explorer, Firefox, Opera, Google Chrome -- try with at least two different browsers).

  • Ensure that power is plugged into your router, and it is turned on.

  • Try to connect to the router using the default username/password -- ensure you try a few different Internet Browsers (i.e. Internet Explorer, Firefox, Opera, Google Chrome -- try with at least two different browsers).

If it is set to the Defaults then the address is 192.168.15.1 , the username is admin and the password is admin also.

Heya,

Sorry it took so long to reply. I was able to reset my router using your instructions from Reset #1. Turned out after the reset that user name was blank and password was 'admin'.

Oh really? Strange. Could have sworn it would be <blank>/password, but oh well :) Happy to see things are working.

I just created my account so i can THANK YOU. In order to get my Network Key they always want to charge me ~$50. I was not able to guess my user name and password and your post helped me. I am so HAPPY! :)

Hey DAN... I Need a help, mine is WRT120N Router, i have tried all what you have suggested above, but I'm not able to login into the router web page, it asks for username & password i gave all combinations but nothing works... in command prompt i checked my default gateway address its (192.168.0.1) what should i do now...?

Hi Dan,

I also tried Reset #1 and #2 and still not able to reset my WRT54G router to default.

I tried http://192.168.1.1 and got the response: Safari can’t open the page “http://192.168.1.1/” because the server where this page is located isn’t responding.

I tried my own my default gateway address and it prompts for login but none of the login combos work.

Can you offer your insight? I am very close to pay Linksys's Tech Support fee since router is out of warranty.
