I switched the cables with my brothers computer. My brothers computer connected. The 98se one still did not connect.

So, I don't think that's it.

Besides trying to connect did you check for a valid ip address.
No use trying to connect without a valid ip address.
Might be something to do with dyns I will have to research. I do not use things like that

How do I check for a valid IP address?

open a dos prompt and type in winipcfg press enter.
on your xp machine go to command prompt and type in ipconfig. What do you get ?
A valid ip address does not start with 169.

Also, I went into network under the control panel and it has DNS disabled. Is that right?

If I enabled it...what do I put in the host name and domain name, and address, and all that?

Well, I entered winipcfg and it was the 169 address.

I was able to manually change the ip address to 192.168.1.104 and the gateway to 192.168.1.254 but no luck. And I forget the name but the other one to 255.255.255.0

My xp machine has all the same info that I manually entered in on the 98se machine except the IP address was ending in 102. So, I know that is because its the second or third computer or whatever. I made sure to try 101, 102, 103, and 104 on the 98se machine but still nothing.

The 98se machine was previously set to obtain the IP address automatically, but apparently it was not obtaining one since the winipcfg was saying the 169 address. Does that help?

Now when I do the winipcfg, the correct addresses and gateways, etc are shown...or atleast are the same as the xp machine.

I'm not sure whats going on.

It's because you have entered the ip address manually (right choice)
Lets see if you can ping any thing.
open the dos prompt and type in ping 192.168.1.100 ( I assume that is your gateway number) if no luck
ping 1 of the xp machines.

Don't worry about the double up...same thing happened to me last night. Website was acting slow and funny.

My gateway I believe is 192.168.1.254

I got that from when I did ipconfig on my working xp machine.

When I ping that everything times out when using the 98 machine

When I ping that gateway with the xp machine it gives me the good results back. 4 packets sent 4 received etc.

Can my ethernet wire be bad? I have checked the connections but I do have it coupled twice because this computer is somewhat far from Residential Gateway. It would be a hassle, but should I maybe move it closer and just use one ethernet wire and see if that helps, just for a test?

I haven't forgot ya, I have been busy with my seasonal job (Summer) and Geek U. Not to mention my girlfriend I will post back when I get a chance to move that tower and hook it up directly to the RG.
