Hello,

For the past 3 days when I log in on my laptop, the first thing that happens is I see what looks like a system window saying "Google Installer has encountered a problem and needs to close". Since then I've had a few BSODs and I'm unable to run Spybot. So I think I've caught something nasty.

I have followed your Malware Removal Guide and completed the Preparation Steps, but then got stopped at Step One - I was able to install Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (after renaming it) but I can't get it to run.

Please advise me on how to proceed.

Thanks!

Hello Sporz,

See if you can do this one.

Download Combofix from any of the links below. You must rename it before saving it. Save it to your desktop.

  • Please post the C:\ComboFix.txt along with a HijackThis log so we can continue cleaning the system.

Hello Sporz,

Yep making progress I think. :)

Now

Please read this post completely, it may make it easier if you copy and paste this post to a new text document or print it for reference later. This will especially help you when your computer is off line.

Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
  • Choose your usual account.
  • Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
  • It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
  • When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
  • Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
  • Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum together with a new HijackThis log.

Hello Sporz,

Your version of AVG has been superseded. You should update to AVG8.

Now

You have used Malwarebytes before. If you still have it on your machine please update and run. Post the scan report back here.

If you no-longer have Malwarebytes please download from Here or Here

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.
Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediatly.

Next

Kaspersky on line scanner is very thorough. It can take a long time and for periods may seem not to be working. Just be patient and let it do its job.

Kaspersky works with Internet Explorer and Firefox 3.

Go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.

Note: you will need to turn off your security programs to allow Kaspersky to do its job.

  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
    • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
      Archives
      Mail databases
  • Click on My Computer under Scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
  • Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
Copy and paste that information in your next post.

So when you return please post
  • MBAM report
  • Kaspersky scan results

Hello Sporz,

My wife think's you're great !

What inestimable taste she has; and you to it seems. :)

Should I be worried by the continued presence of c:\windows\system32\uacinit.dll?

Answer...yes if it is left on your computer. Part of backdoor.tidserv virus. Should have nuked it earlier, my bad. :)

Those ones in Kaspersky are not too bad. The ones in Qoobox quarantine are part of the tools we have been using, can't hurt your machine and will be removed in clean up which we will go to barring untoward events at next post.

The ISP Orange one is not malicious.

Kaspersky does show infection in Thunderbird Trash however. I take it this is your e-mail. I am reluctant to attack e-mail programs because it is too easy to make a mistake and remove some loved ones mail. Best thing is for you to delete everything in Trash. After you have done that come back and tell me how your computer is performing.

Ey up,

My wife does indeed have excellent taste.

c:\windows\system32\uacinit.dll is no longer present. I think MBAM killed it, so no worries.

I don't use Thunderbird any more, that must have been an old one which should have been picked up by spam / AV filters at the time. Emptied the trash, no problems.

My computer seems to be back to normal again :-) No popups, no BSODs, just goodness.

Need any more logs or is it cleanup time?

Yep saw that. I was really meaning I should have nuked it earlier. No worries though as you say.

Yep, I think your machine is clean.

We have a couple of last steps to perform and then you're all set.Posted Image

Follow these steps to uninstall Combofix and some tools used in the removal of malware
  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.
    Posted Image
After that please go here to download OTCleanIt.

Run this psrogram to remove the remaining tools we have been using.

You will be asked to reboot the machine to finish the Cleanup process choose Yes.

MBAM can be uninstalled via control panel add/remove but it may be a useful tool to keep. Erunt can also be uninstalled via the add/remove programs utility, for some though, it may be a useful back up program to hold on to. HijackThis can be uninstalled via the Add or Remove Programs utility in the Control Panel.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A reminder now: Remember to turn back on any anti-malware programs you may have turned off during the cleaning process.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now that you are clean here are some things I think are worth having a look at:

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Be sure and give the Temp folders a cleaning out now and then. This helps with security and your computer will run more efficiently. I clean mine once a week. For ease of use, you might consider the following free program:--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A great way to check that your Microsoft and Java have the latest updates is to go to Software Inspector at Secunia.

I do this weekly. Not only do they tell you which programs need updating but they give you the link to follow.

To bolster your security go to Secunia.com to ensure essential programs are up to date.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Make Internet Explorer more secure
  • Click Start > Run
  • Type Inetcpl.cpl & click OK
  • Click on the Security tab
  • Click Reset all zones to default level
  • Make sure the Internet Zone is selected & Click Custom level
  • In the ActiveX section, set the first two options ("Download signed and unsigned ActiveX controls) to "Prompt", and ("Initialize and Script ActiveX controls not marked as safe") to "Disable".
  • Next Click OK, then Apply button and then OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
* MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well known ad sites and other bad sites. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer, meaning it will be difficult to infect yourself in the future.

* Consider using an alternate browser. Mozilla's Firefox browser is excellant; it is much more secure than Internet Explorer, immune to almost all known browser hijackers, and also has the best built-in pop up blocker (Note: this as an added benefit!) that I have seen. Firefox is my default browser but I retain Internet Explorer as well so that I can access the very few sites that require it.

Firefox may be downloaded from Here

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Startuplite is a tool to help you stop some programs not needed when you start your computer from loading. They will begin automatically only when needed.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

To help protect your computer in the future here are some free programs you can look at:

To learn more about how to protect yourself while on the internet read this article by Tony Klein: So how did I get infected in the first place?

Have a safe and happy computing day!
