first of all, greetings! i've been here only once before, but i was treated so kindly and helped so well, i kept a link to here, "just in case" i needed to go over the steps of removing maleware again.

well. as i've said in my description. in the last week my computer was suddenly slow to download things. i watch a few videos on youtube, and i thought it was my temp. files, so i did a thorough cleaning.

things were still rather slow, and stayed so. i decided to do the works- defragment, etc. i ran my norton antivirus a few days ago, and came out clear. i also ran adaware, and it removed a few things. but, essentially, the speed of my computer stayed the same. finally, i just got frustrated, and looked a little deeper.

i came back here and went through the maleware steps. here is my maleware log, and my hijackthis log, in italics.

my problem and worry, now? well. i can't scan my computer with my norton anymore- an error message comes up when i do. and, when i try to perform a microsoft update, it says i need to install ActiveX.... without providing the accessing bar to do so.

is there anything that can be done so i don't have to do a complete system wipe? because i WILL if i have to- i'd just prefer not to if it could be helped.

let me know. :-)

EDITED IN:

I just figured out what happened with the Microsoft Windows update. I needed to enable something I had disabled previously in my "manage add-ons" section. The updates are "up to date" now, as of the 10th. Norton still refuses to scan, citing a "Error: Norton Antivirus 2008 was unable to scan your computer for infections" (3019,6). So, am trying the "intelligent updater". (I still have 195 days left on the subscription).

Hi there lets have a look see and see if I can find the problem

Download Dr.Web CureIt to the desktop:
ftp://ftp.drweb.com/pub/drweb/cureit/drweb-cureit.exe
  • Doubleclick the drweb-cureit.exe file and Allow to run the express scan
  • This will scan the files currently running in memory and when something is found, click the yes button when it asks you if you want to cure it. This is only a short scan.
  • Once the short scan has finished, mark the drives that you want to scan.
  • Select all drives. A red dot shows which drives have been chosen.
  • Click the green arrow at the right, and the scan will start.
  • Click 'Yes to all' if it asks if you want to cure/move the file.
  • When the scan has finished, in the menu, click file and choose save report list
  • Save the report to your desktop. The report will be called DrWeb.csv
  • Close Dr.Web Cureit.
The .csv file may need to be renamed to .txt to upload it here

THEN

  • Download OTListIt2 to your desktop.
  • Double click on the icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
  • When the window appears, underneath Output at the top change it to Minimal Output.
  • Check the boxes beside LOP Check and Purity Check.
  • Click the Run Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
  • When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTListIt.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTListIt2.
  • Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of these files, one at a time, and post it with your next reply.

i'm sorry this took so long to get back to you. i left it to scan and when i came back, it was starting to standby! so, i had to restart, and do it again.

let's see. i downloaded, and ran Dr. Web Scanner - first the web scan (which came out clean) and then the longer scan. then, i ran the complete scan. a few things were found. here's the report:

it's a bit of a mess of semi-colons. i could upload it as an attachment? would that be easier?

and then, i performed step two that you recommended: OTlistit2.it won't load this, saying the webpage cannot be found. i checked the URL, saw an extra 2, and there it was! :-)

it only came up with one txt list- the OTListIt.txt.

So to make sure I am correct in this, your current problem is that Norton will not update, what is the error message that you get ?
Dr Web killed the items it found

Run OTList2.exe
  • Under the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom, paste in the following
    :OTLI
SRV - (MyWebSearchService [Auto | Stopped]) -- File not found

    :Commands
    [purity]
    [emptytemp]
    [start explorer]
    [Reboot]
  • Then click the Run Fix button at the top
  • Let the program run unhindered, reboot when it is done
  • Then post a new OTL2 log ( don't check the boxes beside LOP Check or Purity this time )

THEN

Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.
Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediatly.

yes, it did. i was very pleased! when i wrote the last reply, norton was refusing to scan. after running the scans you suggested, things greatly improved (i guess because those nasty trojans were gone!)- everything loaded faster. and, this morning, liveupdate ran without incident.
i did, however, run another scan of DrWebCureit, and found three things remaining. report below.

Dare, Dare :)

Now the best part of the day ----- Your log now appears clean :)

A good workman always cleans up after himself so...Download and run this small programme and hit the cleanup button. It will remove all the programmes we have used plus itself. MBAM can be uninstalled via control panel add/remove along with ERUNT. But they may be useful tools to keep

We will now confirm that your hidden files are set to that, as some of the tools I use will change that
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View Tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Do not show hidden files and folders.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.

Please download JavaRa to your desktop and unzip it to its own folder
  • Run JavaRa.exe, pick the language of your choice and click Select. Then click Remove Older Versions.
  • Accept any prompts.
  • Open JavaRa.exe again and select Search For Updates.
  • Select Update Using Sun Java's Website then click Search and click on the Open Webpage button. Download and install the latest Java Runtime Environment (JRE) version for your computer.

XP
Now to get you off to a good start we will clean your restore points so that all the bad stuff is gone for good. Then if you need to restore at some stage you will be clean. There are several ways to reset your restore points, but this is my method:
  • Select Start > All Programs > Accessories > System tools > System Restore.
  • On the dialogue box that appears select Create a Restore Point
  • Click NEXT
  • Enter a name e.g. Clean
  • Click CREATE
You now have a clean restore point, to get rid of the bad ones:
  • Select Start > All Programs > Accessories > System tools > Disk Cleanup.
  • In the Drop down box that appears select your main drive e.g. C
  • Click OK
  • The System will do some calculation and the display a dialogue box with TABS
  • Select the More Options Tab.
  • At the bottom will be a system restore box with a CLEANUP button click this
  • Accept the Warning and select OK again, the program will close and you are done

Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programmes: It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system and to keep them updated.

To keep your operating system up to date visit

To learn more about how to protect yourself while on the internet read our little guide How did I get infected in the first place ?
Keep safe :)

hmm. SOMETHING odd did happen, though, as i was going through the final steps.

i went and performed the steps about installing the latest version of Java, and to remove all the old versions. well, it stopped halfway through, saying microsoft had to close because of an error. i've tried again and again, and it won't remove the old this way.

should i remove it from the Add/Remove management section?
