Hello, I recently purchased an Acer Aspire X1700. I formatted the computer, reinstalled Vista Ultimate 64bit, and now I can't find the drivers anywhere. I actually can't find any drivers for any of the Acer computers on their website. I have formatted many computers and usually finding the drivers is a fairly simple task.

The website listed on the box is www.acer.com/us and when I go to the site, click on Service & Support, click on Download Drivers a download will pop up. The file is called kvSbuRXN.part and I have no idea what that is supposed to be.

There is also another Acer website that I am constantly referred to called www.acerpanam.com which only results in the immediate downloading of another .part file.

Honestly, I'm very frustrated. I've been searching for hours and no matter where I turn Driver Detective (or something like it) is at the end of every search. I would resort to that, but the Acer is currently not able to connect to the internet due to lack of proper drivers.

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Edit: By the way, the computer did not come with any discs with the drivers on them. :) It only came with one disc for the monitor and the only thing useful on it is a .pdf file.

Hello sinisterpurr , iam assuming it had Vista Ultimate 64bit previously installed ?

Just to get a better view of the probelm can you check the device manager for "dodgy " drivers...

Start> My computer ( right click on mouse ) , "select properties" click the "Hardware" tab and open the "Device Manager "

Can you list the ones with a question mark (?) and any with a Yellow Exclaimation(!) mark on them ?

Thank you

Before I formatted, it had Vista Home Premium 64-bit.

I think that perhaps I found what I was looking for. I was checking Google one last time (been messing with this for hours) and stumbled across this page:

http://www.acerpanam...id=3394#results

Desktop and Aspire x1700 led me to a page with drivers and support downloads. This is going to sound silly, but I don't know how to apply these drivers now that I have them. I've never used Vista before (and I'm hating every moment of it) but I remember that the XP drivers were .exes and applied themselves easily.

As for the drivers under device manager that aren't working, there are several. The biggest ones I'm interested in are the ones under Ethernet that have a question mark. Do you still need to know precisely which drivers are buggy?

Edit: ... Okay, I looked at more of the .zips and saw that they are .exes. There were a couple that weren't so I just assumed they all would be that way. My apologies, but thank you very much for your assistance and the interest you have taken in my problem. :) Hopefully, these drivers will all install properly and I can actually get some sleep. If not, then I'll be back to pester you again.

Okay, looks like I'm back. I installed all of the drivers that would take, but some of them wouldn't go through. There were two wlan drivers that came with a .cat, .inf, and a .sys file. Neither one of those would install, though I did try to right click on the .inf file and tray to install it that way. The lan_nvidia would not install because it is supposedly for 32-bit. This doesn't make sense to me, because my computer was originally 64 and still is 64.

Under device manager there are three things with an exclamation point beside it.

Ethernet Controller (I suspect this is why it won't connect to the internet?)
PCI Simple Communications Controller
SM Bus Controller

Any idea what I should do from here?

Hello sinisterpurr

as far as i know , 32 - 64 bit is not compatible... that is why it will not work correctly , you need drivers for 64 bit , have you tried to Right click on the specific device Eg: Ethernet Controller and select properties , and installing the drivers from there.. and correct , the device will not function correctly without the drivers being able to tell it "how to function "

I have tried that, but since I can't connect to the internet it doesn't do any good. Also, the drivers are not on the hard drive anywhere so searching it does nothing. It came with no discs so that is another dead end. Why would they ever have 32bit drivers when the system is 64?

I am going to try installing Vista Home Premium instead of the Ultimate. I don't see why that would create an issue, but it's the only thing I can think of at this point.

Sorry to double post, but I am still having issues. I still cannot connect to the internet and I can't find the proper drivers. I noticed that under Device Manager there are no Network Adapters. Do you think that drivers are still the problem?

Just to refresh on the issue, here is what happened:

I purchased an Acer Aspire x1700 with Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit. I formatted, reinstalled Vista Ultimate 64-bit. Everything works fine, but it won't connect to the internet. Under device manager there are three drivers with a ! icon beside them (Ethernet Controller, PCI Simple Communications Controller, and SM Bus Controller). Also, under Device Manager there is no detection of a Network Adapter. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Edit: I am thinking about just taking the computer back to Best Buy and swapping out for the same model. It's not something I wanted to do, but I can't get the internet working. Kind of sucks to have a shiny, expensive, yet useless piece of hardware cluttering up my computer desk.

I do have a couple of last questions though. When I get this new pc, if I create the recovery discs before formatting, will they have all the drivers I will need? Also, is there any way to format and install Vista without losing the drivers previously installed on the system? I think there was a way to do that with XP, but if there is for Vista I am unfamiliar with it. I've actually never used recovery discs so I'm uncertain if it's possible to "recover" after a format. I'm really just interested in the drivers.

When installing Vista I noticed a "Load Driver" option. What exactly is that for? I think it is to install drivers from another device? Correct my if I'm wrong.

One of the big irks about this system is that when I purchased it they had the dark drive partitioned into two equal drives. Personally, I find that irritating because I don't need two 320 gig (roughly) drives and I don't feel like navigating through both of them to find my stuff. That is a big reason why I formatted in the first place, but also to get rid of all the junk that comes preinstalled.

Once again, thank you for your time and patience.

What you have is an OEM Vista install, and it is VERY IMPORTANT to recognize this!!!!!111oneoneshiftone
This means that you have crazy a whacked-out fadangle of hardware rigged up nice an spiffy-like to work 'perfectly.'
When you formatted, you just pointlessly wiped out that custom configuration that you PAID for (teh lol lol lol lol).
If you intend to configure it yourself, why praytell, would you buy a pre-built? You're doing all the work AND paying someone to do it for you. :)
Any either-who:
1) Yes, creating that Recovery Media will give you a copy of the installation CD/DVD that you will be able to pull the drivers off* of in your custom install. *(this is assuming the information isn't encrypted in some proprietary format on the install disks). But bare in mind that you'll have multiple disks(I have the exact same model) of the recovery media to scan for drivers.
2) Yes,, you can format install your own flavor of an OS but understand some of the more difficult drivers might be beyond your abilities or the scope of this forum(namely that 32-bit NIC driver, read **below).
3) To recover the system as it is, I could 'extract' the driver from my system(same model as yours), send it to you and see if it loads but chances are you'll just get the same 32-bit error.
4) Yes you can 'recover' with the recovery media, it will completely wipe, repartition and install the original factory settings as if you'd never wiped it the first time.(I used to be a tech support agent for Sony, before my job was outsourced to Manilla, and I looooooved recovery media. PC Cure-All).
5) That 'Load Drivers' option was most likely for the NIC you're having trouble with, as Windows usually tries to register itself online during installation. This Load Drivers option is also very similar to what you should be seeing in Device Manager, but instead of choosing to 'Search the InterWebs for Drivers!' you should have chosen 'Browse' and pointed to that 32-bit driver or any directory that you think could have a driver in it.
6) Partitioned Hard Drive Anger?! My god man! That partition was for your safety! Acer had your hopes/dreams/wishes in mind when they did that! Separating OS/ProgramFiles from user data is a VERY sound thing to do as it keeps these two data types SEPARATE, effectively reserving a chunk of your harddrive as 'minimal use' which will cause your PC's life span to jump by 2-3 years, as opposed to dropping your data files and OS/Programs all into one giant pot that you constantly mix-up and move around(more wear and tear on parts) all the time, everytime you move/delete/compress/update your data files you're fragmenting both data and OS files ... it's just craziness. I understand your undying drive to 'have-it-your-way' cuz you paid a big-*** chunk of money for it but bro, believe me it is in your best interest to go with their configuration for all the reasons that you don't know. Especially since you paid for it(and my god was it a good buy! I got mine at Office Depot for $476, but they tried to charge me the $16 monitor tax when I didn't buy a monitor with this PC lol! Lord knows I tore that manager a new one. I am currently rubbing a free $50 Office Depot gift card all over me).

Gonna boot to Vista and see if I can upload the NIC driver I have installed.

**Though I am not sure why the OS won't take the 32-bot driver and just run it on a single processor/channel of the dual-core(I understand you're using a 64-bit HAL but this backwards compatibility should be possible and included in Vista, since it claims to be a 64-bit OS), I suspect that the Acer engineers that created this model's disk image may have had to devise some neat way of forcing to accept a manufacturer's 32-bit driver, to keep from having to write their own 64-bit version. And kudos to them for figuring it out! Your best solution is just to use the original configuration that it came with, but if you want to press the matter further then I have a bit of information that might help you. The vendor/device ID is 10de:07dc, you might want to Google it and see if you can turn up a driver from the original manufacturer. Don't like Vista? Fedora/Linux is uber hawt on this HTPC! My only complaint is that the processors are being recognized as a single 32-bit @ 2.4 Ghz rather than a 64-bit 2x32 @ 1.2 Ghz per.

I HAS FOUND IT!
I have all of the files needed to emulate the 'freaky weird 32 to 64 bit driver juking craziness of doom.'
Here is a representation of where to place each file:
http://s18.photobuck...irex1700NIC.jpg
Due to the size limit on files I had to compress the driver files into two separate .rar's.
Place the files in Acerx1700NIC-1.rar into C:\Windows\System32
Place the file in Acerx1700NIC-2.rar into C:\Windows\System32\drivers
Open Device Manager and choose to Install/Update driver for your NIC.

Follow this link to download the driver files:
http://www.freedrive...rx1700nic-1.rar
http://www.freedrive...rx1700nic-2.rar

Good luck, and next time build your own! :)

I too have this problem just now with my X1700. I'd like a little bump to this thread. How am I to get the Ethernet Controller driver of the 32 bit system to run on the 64 bit vista? I've downloaded the .rar's and extracted properly. (I believe I mostly had device manager search the downloaded file). Is there more to it? Anyone have any news on this subject?

I too am having the same problem. I am trying to get Vista Business installed on the computer.

I looked around for a recovery partition and didn't find one, nor did the computer come with any recovery cds. If it did I would have re-imaged the os drive and pulled the drivers off of there for the new install.

Okay, I was able to recover from this by directing device manager to look in : C:\windows.old\windows\system32
for the drivers. Thankfully I didn't format the drive when I installed the Business edition.

I am a computer specialist with nearly 20 years experience supporting computers. I'm retired now and purchased the same computer u have for school. I liked it because it was compact, sleek and really cool looking n had great specs 4 the money. I could actually fit n my book bag @ the time. But I hated Vista and still sucks even after having used it 4 several years now. I am positively frustrated to death that u cant easily fix and solve problems on there and find it a disgrace that Acer just doesn't AUTOMATICALLY provide a Recovery Disk. I read this forum and others and could not believe theses have still not been solved. All these companies hungry and want link you to everything and 4getting the little people who just want to use their computer trouble-free. Even though I have experience and expertise it frustrates the [bleep] out of me right now that I simply don't have a Recovery Disk to fix my problem and Acer so busy promoting its brand has Vista disorganized, junky and I get confused all the time where to look for or find stuff so I can imagine what a newbie would be going thru. Even though I plenty know what I'm doing I get aggravated and frustrated for the same reasons, because who wants to visit a blog or forun and dig thru hundreds of threads just find the answer? I find this appalling in general. I mean how hard could it have been 4 Acer 2 just include the [bleep] RECOVERY disk? I like this PC and think it is a great value for the money. I agree with the commentor below and did NOT remove my DATA FILE on my hard drive but even with the background I have (as far as it goes, with computers) I CANNOT even find the DATA FILE so I can repair and/or restore Vista Vista is the worst Operating System on the planet and many major hardware and software companies don't even bother providing a version that is compatible with this truly awful OS, the worst I have been forced 2 use in decades. I HATE THAT! I really want to get rid of it but simply am too poor to chuck it and go Windows 7. If anyone who visits this forum has the answer (and not a smartass one) to my question how do I get my hands on a recovery disk for Acer Aspire X1700? Sarcastic eggheads need not respond to this question as I am already frustrated enuf and just want the answer to my question. Thanks
