I am tring to reassign or change the com port number on a laptop. The laptop is a Toshiba Satellie A10-S100 and has no serial ports. I am using a Tripp Lite USB to Serial adapter, but by defualt is is assign to Com Port 5. The software I need to use only allow fr com 1 or com 2. Is it possible for me to change the com port assignment number? The OS is Win XP SP3.

Thank You for any assistance.

Com ports 1 and 2 are typically actual physical ports, and anything over 3 is virtual. It may not be possible to use Coms 1 and 2.

You can change the port number in the Device Manager, properties of the device in question and on its advanced tab.

Com 2 was not listed as "In Use", so I set it to Com 2. Will be able to test it out on Friday.

Thank You for the reply!!
