Ach.... Now I'm feeling stupid.
For some time now my old HD has been making soft clicks I didn't use to hear it make before. That could be it, right?

Anyway, I've downloaded memtest86 (http://www.memtest86.com/), I'll run the test.
Never did an HD test. How do I do that?

Thanks,
SOADA

Not good. If you have any important data there, don't use the drive at all.
You may leave memtest alone for now. Get to HD test: Run hard drive diagnostics: http://www.tacktech....ay.cfm?ttid=287
Those tools will allow you to make bootable CD, which will test the drive.

Got it all planned:

I'm as backed up as humanly possible, on DVDs and on my new HD : )
I intend to complete my next Practice Log and buy a new HD, then install the new HD and make it my boot device, partition, install Windaz & Ubuntu, make all necessary updates & configurations, then format the faulty HD and do some thorough testing on it.

I'll post the results here when done, but it's gonna take me awhile : )

Hi : )

Successfully reinstalled everything. Now my old disk is out of the loop.
I've downloaded the WD tools from that link you gave me - it seems the only way to map bad sectors is by running the drive format utility, am I right? Not sure I wanna format it yet.
I ran checkdisk on both NTFS & FAT32 partitions there. It found some file-system errors and corrected them on what was my system drive, and nonw on the other (a FAT32), but I think it had nothing to do with an actual drive test, right?
