I desperately need help. There is some form of program that makes a popup appear saying that I have malware on my computer. Naturally I have ignored it. However, the default page for IE6 is set to clon.biz and I can't change it. If I click yes to the popup window, guess where I am taken? Yep, Clon.biz search results.

I have tried MSAS, Spybot, Ad-Aware, Counterspy, Hijackthis. MSAS reports the clon.biz and will remove it. However, as soon as I open IE6 I am taken to clon.biz and the infernal 'windows malware alert' popup window still appears.

I have looked in my startup and cannot see anything that should not be there. I have started in safe mode and run every anti spyware and AV program I have with no success.

IE6 also auto-opens to clon.biz andI cant seem to stop it. If anyone can help I would be very grateful. As it stands, I am contemplating formatting and re-installing.

I am not sure what to do at the moment as I have discovered that on a reboot to safe mode I still get the popup window and IE6 auto opens to the clon.biz search page.

Any suggestions on how to kill this thing? None of the regular anti-spyware progs seem to work, although MSAS does find it, it can't get rid of it.

Anyone got a silver bullet?

You mean you ran HijackThis in SAFE MODE? I don't want that log. ONLY run HijackThis in Normal Mode, that way it will show us all the startup programs you have listed.

OK, I want you to give me a log in Normal Mode, but give me this log first (hold off the HijackThis log until I ask for it again later on):

Download L2MFix from one of these two locations:

Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe. Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts. Then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop. Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing Enter. This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening. After a minute or 2, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it into this thread.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 or any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

I sent in the HJT log in safe mode because the clon.biz scumware is operative in safe mode as well as normal mode. I thought it might have been easier to go through the safe mode log as it would be shorter!

I cannot get the L2MFIX batch file to do anything. On double clicking nothing happens, let alone getting the options of 1 or 2.

The problem with running it in safe mode is that some other programs (good or bad) may be disabled when you do this.

What happened to L2MFix? Try this:

Copy autoexec.nt from the C:\WINDOWS\repair folder to C:\WINDOWS\system32 folder. Now try running L2MFix.

If it still won't work, do this:

Please empty any Quarantine folder in your antivirus program and purge all recovery items in the Spybot program (if you use it) before running this tool.

Download the Mwav virus checker at http://www.mwti.net/antivirus/mwav.asp (Use Link 3)

1. Save it to a folder.
2. Reboot into Safe Mode.
3. Double click the Mwav.exe file. This is a stand alone tool and NOT just a virus checker......so it won't install anything.
4. Select all local drives, scan all files, and press SCAN. When it is completed, anything found will be displayed in the lower pane.
5. In the Virus Log Information Pane......
Left click and highlight all the information in the Lower pane --- Use &CTRL C &on your keyboard to copy everything found in the lower pane and save it to a notepad file
*Note* If prompted that a virus was found and you need to purchase the product to remove the malware, just close out the prompt and let it continue scanning. We are not going to use this to remove anything...but to ID the bad files.

Once you copy that to a Notepad file...highlight the text and copy it here.

A lot of this stuff is the quarantine files from NAV (which I have cau and copied to the end of this scan). Even so, there seems to be a lot of data for you to have to trawl through. Can I apologize in advance?!!

Download KillBox http://www.greyknigh...spy/KillBox.exe. Run KillBox and check the box that says 'End Explorer Shell While Killing File'. Next click on 'Delete on Reboot'. For each of the following files below, check the box that says 'Unregister .dll Before Deleting' if it's not grayed out. Copy and paste each of the following into KillBox (hitting the X button for each file - choose NO when it asks if you want to reboot):

C:\WINDOWS\System32\guninst.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\sysinit32m.exe

Delete all the quarantined files in this folder:

C:\Program Files\Norton AntiVirus\Quarantine\

The Temp folders should be cleaned out periodically as installation programs and hijack programs leave a lot of junk there. Download CleanUp! http://cleanup.stevengould.org/ (Alternate Link if main link don't work - http://www.greyknigh...spy/Cleanup.exe ) and install it. Run CleanUp! and click on CleanUp! button. When it asks you if you want to logoff, click on Yes.

Restart and post back a new HijackThis log. Try running L2MFix again and see if it works. Try running it in Safe Mode if it still won't work. If it's still causing a problem, we will see if fixing it this time in HijackThis will work.

Here is the HJT log file. The first thing I noticed was that clon.biz is no longer listed. Indeed, I no longer get the popup windows advising me I need free anti-spyware progs, nor does IE6 go to clon.biz anymore. Since followg your instructions, Ihave had no more instances of clon.biz lurking.

Hi Doug, we are almost done. I just see two files that needs to be deleted here. Let's see if L2MFix will do the job.

Close any programs you have open since this step requires a reboot.

From the l2mfix folder on your desktop, double click l2mfix.bat and select option #2 for Run Fix by typing 2 and then pressing Enter, then press any key to reboot your computer. After a reboot, your desktop and icons will appear, then disappear (this is normal). L2MFix will continue to scan your computer and when it's finished, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it back into this thread, along with a new hijackthis log.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other files in the l2mfix folder unless you are asked to do so!

Your log is clean.

Turn off system restore by right clicking on My Computer and go to Properties->System Restore and check the box for Turn off System Restore. Click Apply and then OK. Restart your computer and uncheck the same box to enable System Restore.

Make sure to get the latest updates for Windows and Internet Explorer at http://v5.windowsupd...t.aspx?ln=en-us.
